I am a caregiver in a home setting. My client just found out she has mrsa.Although she has had a lesian for six months or more. Ido laundry dishes bathe help w/toileting. I wear gloves for toileting butnothing else. I relize now to wear gloves and have always washed hands. How likely is it that I could catch this.I have been sick all winter w/pneumonia once and just one sickness after another. Also how can yoiu be tested? And is it expensive?

As an emergency physician I have been dealing with CA-MRSA for about 2 years. Fortunately we are finding that most strains are still resistant to either doxycycline or Bactrim (Trimethiprim/sulfa)or both. I worry about what will happen when these relatively inexpensive antibiotics become ineffective.

Unfortunately, in the emergency room setting there are obstacles to following the CDC guidelines that recommend avoiding early use of these choices in suspected cases. The most obvious is lack of reliable follow-up (you can't be sure patients will return in a prompt manner). Another problem that one seldom sees addressed is the fact that many of these lesions have nothing to drain at the time of first presentation. Traditionally we would have held off giving antibiotics, but now we worry that we might be missing a deeper infection.

The result is that more patients are getting the drugs that will kill the CA-MRSA, but this could spell more problems with resistance down the line.

Meanwhile, I agree with your emphasis on hygiene, especially with putting more attention on the value of thorough hand-washing.

I found that this article was well written and accessible to persons like me who have no medical training. I am of the opinion that the proliferation of cleansers containing will pose serious problems for the population.

This was very interesting. As a first year osteopathic medical student, I have always wondered if using antibotic ointments and soaps was ever a good idea in the first place. And with the MRSA scare, my school is making us disinfect our tables before and after we use them.
