My husband is a second year resident right now. We have three children, the oldest is four. We live 1700 miles from our parents and I am a full-time mother. In response to Vasca, we have accrued a lot of debt. Medical school tuition and living expenses were paid for with loans. Now that he is earning a resident's salary, we have been able to purchase a house, however, money is still very tight.

You state that you are putting off dating and marriage in order to make money. I guess if your first priority in life is money, that is exactly what you should do. We decided that our first priorities would be service to our fellow man, including the children we brought into this world.

The residency my husband is in right now has ten residents per class. In his class there are two with wives and children. So, I guess, this article would only appeal to 20% of his class, and isn't as all encompassing as you all would like it to be. However, I appreciate reading that there are other couples out there struggling like we are.

What amazes me is how a team of husband and wife MD balance it all. It's been encouraging to get to know couples like this who aren't running off the deep end.

I agree on the comments that the article doesn't focus on female physicians. In my university we're roughly a 70-30 ratio and less and less men are entering med school each semester!

I also wonder what are the financial situations of these married families with kids. I mean, med school is insanely expensive (it costs my family roughly 12,000 dollars a year which might not sound much to an American, but that's a lot of money in the country I live in). You aren't earning cash practising medicine until you become an intern, where in the hell do these people get all the cash to have kids, pay med school and buy a house???

Right now I'm stalling dating men. I'd rather date a guy who's not into med school (plus the fact that there's so few eligible men in my faculty doesn't help). I'd rather finish the career, have fun time for myself because I could never afford to have any fun at all for so many years. Maybe they shoudl do articles about med students who pennypick their intuition and thus stall marriage and such until they have the time and cash to actually enjoy being single.

What about the families with a dog? Or a cat? What will my goldfish think?

This is less about the gender/class/career make-up of a marriage or family, than it is a particular view of how the changes in life can be handled.

Planning, care, concern, forgiveness, and flexibility all make for a two-way, healthy lifestyle. Look for the answer between the lines, somewhere outside the box. Interpolation and extrapolation.

I understand the point of the article is about 'planning ahead', but it is only comprised of examples of women making accommodations to their husband-physicians. Common today is a 50-50 gender split in medical school classes and there are many student-student & physician-physician couples. Unfortunately, the above examples fail to acknowledge the significant role of women in medicine.

yeah, by a mile, and sometimes not planning on having kids doesn't mean that you won't have any kids
