Overview

Since its founding in 1843, the School of Medicine has been at the forefront of medical education and research. Already a leading educational institution for more than a century, in 1952 the School of Medicine initiated the most advanced medical curriculum in the country, integrating the basic and clinical sciences, focusing on organ systems, and featuring an introduction to patients in the first year. The School of Medicine is one of only three schools in history to receive a flawless accreditation report from the Liaison Committee on Medical Education, the authority that grants accreditation to U.S. and Canadian M.D. programs.

Primary Application

For Entry in 2007

Secondary Application

Upon submission of the primary application, the secondary will be sent to you as soon as the office receives it. They will send you an email with a link to the application and a password to access the site. In 2006, it was possible to log in without the email, but I would recommend waiting until you get the official invitation before entering in your information.

MD Interviews

MD/PhD Interviews

You will first receive an email notifying you of an offer to interview. You then call Donna McIlwain to set up a date to go and visit the school. The cost of the flight isn't covered, but all other expenses incurred during the trip are covered. Typically, you will fly in on a Wednesday evening. A MSTP student will pick you up from the airport and take you to a house for a dinner hosted by students (if driving, you can just go directly there). Case interviews about 20 at a time (more than last year), so they split us into two groups for the dinners. Afterwards, you will go and stay overnight with your assigned student host (may be different from the person who picked you up from the airport). The next morning, you go to the MSTP admissions office at 8 am and hear a presentation by the directors and eat a light breakfast (pastries, bagels, fruit, etc). Donna will show you a quick tour of the place and then you're off to your interviews. Typically you will get 5-6 interviews, about 30 minutes each. After the first 2 or 3, you will have a catered lunch with students, then a student-led tour. Afterwards, you complete the rest of your interviews. At about 5.30pm, Donna arranges for a shuttle to take you the hotel, where you will change clothes for dinner. Students will pick you up about 30 min later and take you to a sit-down restaurant. Afterwards, students will take the interviewees to some kind of entertainment venue (when I went, one group went to shoot pool, the other went to a Halloween House). Sleep at the hotel. The next morning is a hefty breakfast from the BRB cafeteria (Donna provides a coupon) and then a couple more interviews. At least one of the interviews over the two days will be with one of the directors (Harding or Dubyak) and one will be an interview for the medical school. A shuttle will take people back to the airport. People interviewing at CCLM will have a few more interviews on the first day and the second day they will go straight to Cleveland Clinic.

Accommodations

Travel Information

Much of this information has been taken from the Case Western Admissions Website. Note that the directions given are to go to the School of Medicine. Perhaps someone from one of the other professional schools can add the details to get there.

Airport Information

Directions from Airport: The easiest, simplest and least expensive way of getting to the campus is to take the RTA Rapid Transit train from the Cleveland Hopkins Airport to the University Campus. Board the Rapid at the airport (heading East) and ride to the UNIVERSITY CIRCLE stop. After departing the train, turn right, follow the Case sign through the doors and down the steps, and go to the end of the tunnel. Proceed through turnstiles, turn left, go up the steps to the University Circle bus shelter. Free shuttle busses (marked UCI or CIRCLELINK) run every 15 minutes from 6:15 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. to all areas of the campus. Ask the driver to let you off at the School of Medicine. To the Medical School Building

Driving Directions to School

The University is located about 4 miles directly east of downtown Cleveland on Euclid Avenue (U.S. routes 6 and 20). Most road maps of Ohio have the University clearly marked.

until you reach the downtown Cleveland exits. Exit at Chester Avenue and follow Chester East approximately 3 miles to Euclid Avenue. Turn left at Euclid and proceed one block to Adelbert Road. Turn right, and follow Adelbert Road to the end of the block where you will see the garage (Lot 53) on your right. To the Medical School Building

Bus

The Greyhound Bus Depot is located downtown on Chester Avenue near E. 14th Street. Cabs are available or you can walk one block south on E. 14th to Euclid Avenue. There you can catch an eastbound RTA bus (#9 or #6) to the campus. Get off at Adelbert Road and walk along Adelbert Road until you see a sign directing visitors to the School of Medicine along a walkway between Rainbow Babies & Childrens Hospital and the School of Medicine. To the Medical School Building

Subway/Train

Arrive Amtrak Station, take cab to Public Square. Take eastbound bus #9 or #6 eastbound to the campus. Read directions in paragraph above for instructions to the School.

The Rapid in Cleveland is not as widely used as subway/transit systems in many larger cities, but it can get you to areas that are inconvenient to reach by car, such as the airport or downtown spots. The rapid line Case sits along goes directly to the airport via Tower city so it is a great way to get to Indians, Browns and Cavaliers games as well as the Rock Hall, Flats and West Side Market, although you will have to transfer to other lines for some of these locations. It is a convenient way to get to the airport, if you can’t find a fellow student to drive you there. Each way is $1.50, but try to have exact change because there isn’t always someone manning the entrance to make change for you. As far as safety, traveling alone late at night would not be a good idea, especially for women, but during the day it’s no problem.
