What is Appendicitis?

Appendicitis is the most common emergency abdominal surgery and references to it are common in pop culture, but what actually causes it? Appendicitis is inflammation of the appendix, a small, potentially vestigial organ that branches off the large intestine. Inflammation is usually a result of some sort of obstruction in the lumen of the appendix, which ultimately leads to infection. This video covers the pathophysiology of more common causes, important signs and symptoms, complications, and treatment.
