Flexibility and amazing research opportunities. You have the ability to tailor the program to your needs. Want to do a clerkship before starting the PhD? No problem. Want to do a post-doc in Paris before going back to 3rd year? That's fine too. Also, the huge number of world class researchers and facilities is fabulous. The selection at UCSD alone is amazing, but you can also work with PIs at the Salk, the Burnham, La Jolla Institute for Allergy and Immunology, Scripps Research Institute, and even the Scripps Institute for Oceanography.
