What do you like most?
-
Ample research opportunities, fantastic training facilities, incredibly diverse student body, enthusiastic and approachable faculty, many student support resources (professional development and personal).
-
Emphasis on clinical medicine and the actual day-to-day practice thereof
-
UIUC Campus - extremely high level of personal attention and support from the administration and faculty, the collegiate atmosphere, and the research opportunities
What do you like least?
-
Slight impingement on student autonomy and time with frequent mandatory sessions, long clinical hours.
-
Limited (and limitations of) campus study space
-
Nothing thus far, but I'm sure satisfaction depends entirely upon campus - the UIUC campus is typically lumped in with the others in reviews, rankings, and reputation but there is clearly a higher caliber of research and a different personality than Chicago etc.
What are the facilities and clinics like (old/new, well maintained, etc.)?
-
Medical school is a historical building but all academic rooms have been restored with latest technology. World class surgical training facility - SITL (largest in the country). I've heard from third party volunteers that the clinical simulation facilities are the best they've encountered across all chicago medical schools. Hospital is recently renovated, currently modern and well maintained.
How do students from this program do after graduation - are they adequately prepared for practice?
-
This school is well known for providing ample clinical exposure to a highly morbid patient population throughout clinical years. Residencies are aware of this (especially in midwest region) and take it into consideration when evaluating applicants.
-
Well; nearly 1 of every 6 physicians in the state of Illinois were trained at UIC-COM. Recent years have yielded excellent match rates with an excellent range of matched specialties and locations.
-
Very competitive - see specific site match lists
What are rotations like?
-
All core rotations are required with mandatory shelf exams at conclusion of each rotation. Final grades are a combination of clinical evaluation and shelf exam score.
