What do you like most?

Clinical rotations

What I mainly like about this school is all of the different departments and programs you get access to by being a part of this school. University of Utah is a big health system. Most of the attendings that work here moved here specifically because they want to be here, so there is also less of them being miserable and trying to inflict their misery on you. On the contrary, the attendings here seem to usually be happy(ish).

Excellent organization; high resource availability; open administration

What do you like least?
-
Classes
-
The attendance policy is very overbearing and there is very little flexibility. Administration seems to care about filling up the classroom as much as possible so instructors feel like they are being paid attention to, even if most of the students are just online shopping on their laptops.
-
Communication is sometimes lacking, but not often
-
Paternalistic administration, lack of trust
What are the facilities and clinics like (old/new, well maintained, etc.)?
-
There will be a new building in 2026, so you will likely have a very different experience than I did.
How do students from this program do after graduation - are they adequately prepared for practice?
-
The school is in the process of changing to a new curriculum and how they do after graduation has yet to be seen.
What are rotations like?
-
Highly variable experiences in the new curriculum. Everyone is assigned to a different group of preceptors with very little overlap between. Some students have very little surgery experience and some have no family medicine experience. Neurology and psychiatry are basically missing from the curriculum. Many preceptors are not on board with the new changes and do not want to engage with students.

How do students from this program do in the Match?
-
This is unclear due to the curriculum changes.
Any other information you want to share?
-
I would just be aware that the new curriculum has a very short preclinical phase (~10-12 months) and that you are likely to have many gaps in your knowledge. This is essentially an experimental curriculum and it's not really clear how it will turn out.

Very pleased with my education
