About the School
The Oregon Health & Science University School of Dentistry is a publicly supported institution located in Portland, a city of 530,000 residents in a greater metropolitan area of approximately 1.8 million. The School of Dentistry is located in the wooded hills of southwest Portland on a 116 acre campus. Paths for joggers, bicyclists and pedestrians connect the university with the heart of the city just two miles away. The dental school was established in 1898, and the School of Dentistry became incorporated into the Oregon State System of Higher Education in 1945. Since 1974, the School of Dentistry has been part of the Oregon Health & Science University, an institution devoted solely to educating health professionals and biomedical researchers. A dental school is more than just an institution, courses, classrooms and clinics--it's people. OHSU dental students find friendly people who work together as a team toward one goal: providing each student with the best dental education available.
Curriculum
The practice of dentistry requires a firm foundation in the basic sciences enabling the dentist to discriminate between normal anatomic, histologic and developmental variation and pathological alteration. The dentist must have knowledge of anatomy, histology, embryology, genetics, physiology, neuroanatomy, neurophysiology, biochemistry, biomaterials, microbiology, pharmacology, pathology and behavioral science sufficient to understand the basis for clinical diagnosis and treatment. Knowledge of basic science and the ability to apply that knowledge critically is the foundation of the dental health care professions.

Why no Tier Rankings?
Although we could tier rank, over the past 25 years we've found no compelling benefit for ranking schools. Students are most successful when they prioritize personal and academic fit over school rank.
