"A number of things surprised me about OHSU. First, they have a world class facility with top notch faculty. Chair came from Hopkins and is really pro residents and education. Second, schedule seems to be well-balanced with a lot of good cases including cards, regional, and peds, which I was looking for in a program. Third, residents were super happy and excited to be at the program. Smaller program made for a close-knit group with a lot of comaraderie. It seemed like a really good group to be a part of. Portland...enough said. After interviewing at 10 other big midwest/west coast programs, I could not believe how competitive of a program OHSU has. It is a huge honor just to get an interview there. They are a top program that takes care of their residents."

"Of all the places I interviewed, OHSU was probably the most well-rounded in terms of quality and breadth of clinical experience, didactics, faculty, etc. The chair, Dr. Kirsch, came from Hopkins a few years ago and is very involved in resident education...clearly a great strength of the program. Didactics are organized in a "spiral" curriculum so each year you are touching back on the same topics but at a deeper level of intricacy and understanding each time.
<P> Portland is, of course, a beautiful and eclectic town. Perfect for outdoor-lovers, bicycle enthusiasts, and beer aficionados alike."

"They wine and dine you. I think they put me up in the nicest hotel on the interview trail. Dinner at a classy restaurant with some of the residents. Next day, was laid back. Started out with intro from program director/chair. Then interviews that were friendly, yet informative. One with PD, other two with attendings. Then lunch with residents, and finally tour of the three hospitals, which are all located together up on a hill over looking Portland with a fabulous view of Mt. Hood. Of course they took us for a ride on the tram. You gotta love this program!"

"Program puts you up in a 4.5 star, very cool and modern downtown hotel. Dinner with the residents in the hotel's restaurant (great Thai/Asian food). Picked up by a cab the morning of interview. Start off the day with a presentation about the program by chair, then two 30-min interviews with faculty members and 15-min interviews with chair and PD. Lunch, then end the day with a tour including a ride on the awesome tram!"

"Program paid for a 4.5 Star Hotel downtown + upscale dinner the night before the interview. Breakfast with Presentation by Dr. Kirsch. Then you will meet with Dr. Swide (PD) and Dr. Kirsch (Chairman) individually for about 15 minute each. Then you begin longer interview with two attendings. Should last anywhere from 30-45min each. Followed by tour and a catered lunch. Look, this is becoming the best program in the country if not already. Very hard working chairman who takes friday calls for the past 6 years. Also hired an education PhD on staff especially for that purpose! NO WEAKNESS IN NUMBER OF CASES. NO OFF SITE ROTATIONS. A very friendly yet inquisitive atmosphere here. An environment that foster discovery and citizenship. Residents are extremely happy. Plenty of grant money for research. 5 year review cycle granted by the ACGME (highest). Portland is the most intelligent, green, livable & beautiful city in the world in my opionion. You will not be disappointed here. I absolutely love OHSU. Would recommend doing an away rotation here to experience the QUALITY of teaching first hand. A MODEL FOR FUTURE ANESTHESIOLOGY RESIDENCY TRAINING PROGRAMS. Take a look into the OREGON SCHOLAR programs if you are interested in critical care or research!
