What was the style of the interview?

One-on-one

What type of interview was it?

Open file

What is one of the specific questions they asked you (question 1)?

"Student: How do you think your interest in philosophy is relevant to medicine?" Report Response | I was asked this question too

What is one of the specific questions they asked you (question 2)?

"Student: Tell me about your best friend (I didn't expect this one either but it wasn't hard)." Report Response | I was asked this question too

What is one of the specific questions they asked you (question 3)?

"I got a lot of "tell me more about x" from my applications from the student. The faculty interview was more conversational, but they were both conversational." Report Response | I was asked this question too

What was the most interesting question?

"How do you think your interest in philosophy is relevant to medicine? This totally caught me off gaurd. I got through it ok but nowhere near as well as I would have had I thought about it ahead of time. I have so many ideas its hard to organize them into a concise answer of the top of my head. It made for great conversation though." Report Response | I was asked this question too

What was the most difficult question?

"Same as above." Report Response | I was asked this question too

How did you prepare for the interview?

"Read over my essays, read over input on SDN, and researched the school." Report Response

What impressed you positively?

"The 3rd year (when you do your own project) is very flexible. You can do research or get another degree (MPH, JD, MPH, etc.) and do so at just about any other school (I was told that people have gone to Oxford and Africa). The first year doesn't seem that it would be as hard as you would think, but still harder obviously." Report Response

What impressed you negatively?

"I am a city boy, and Durham is really small. It's nearby stuff to do but you have to have a car if you want to go there (or else you are dependent on others for a social life). There are a lot of things to do if you to get away from the hustle and bustle of a city, which is good, but I like being within minutes of doing anything you want." Report Response

What did you wish you had known ahead of time?

"You really should have a car if you want to go there. I guess that's true of a lot of schools but definitely Duke and since I live in a city I've never bothered to buy one. I guess I should buy one now. " Report Response

What are your general comments?

"Duke is a great school with a lot of resources and opportunities. The 3rd year is a very good thing and is very flexible. The people were all very nice. Both interviews were open file and relaxed. The only thing I didn't like is that it is in a small town, but I liked it so much I would be willing to go there anyway." Report Response
