What impressed you positively?:
---Excellent facility and opportunity to work and rub shoulders with the top physicians in the US. ---Lots of money available for research if interested. ---Graduates have been getting top notch pain fellowships with one recent grad starting at Hopkins next year (3 out of 5 grads this year got into pain fellowships. 2 were not interested and are going into private practice) ---Quite a few DO's in the residency program (8 DO's 7 MD's) but no DO faculty. ---Front loaded inpatient but gets a lot easier with a lot of outpatient exposure in PGY3 and PGY4. ---You will see lots of rare pathology at Hopkins. ---International electives encouraged (3 electives total. One in each year. 2 have to be done at any ACGME accredited institution). Hopkins is helping Tawwam hospital in the UAE to develop a 120 bed rehab hospital. Residents in the future might be required to rotate there according to PD. A new TBI accident rotation is being added. ---Hopkins Med is going to require the medical students to do a month of PM&R starting 2010 so that will be excellent for the program and PM&R in general. ---Excellent peds exposure at Kennedy Krieger Institute. ---The Hopkins name is well known locally and internationally. ---Residents are very approachable, friendly and a smart. ---Multi disciplinary pain program with internationally renowned expert lectures. ---EMGs with Neuro and PM&R. Residents said they hit the 200 no. w/o any problem. ---Recent addition of University of Michigan pain medicine grad Dr. Jarrod D. Friedman. He is an excellent teacher and very approachable. ---According to residents PD is approachable and flexible. ---Board review course, Anatomy course at Johns Hopkins Med, P&O course, 360 evals etc. Report as inappropriate
What impressed you negatively?:
---Front heavy inpatient with residents working harder than I have seen in any other program so far (pgy2 -9 months of inpatient-12-14 hr days. Only resident on floor. 40 calls a year. 20 calls PGY3 and 10 PGY4). ---Patients have complicated medical issues (vents etc) and they have to be taken care of by the residents at Hopkins. ---Didactics are weak but are improving as per residents. ---According to some current residents a few attendings are not very approachable. ---Since Dr. Krabak left last year sports medicine is weak. They are in the process of hiring someone. ---Limited spinal cord exposure. As far as I know spinal cord patients are seen only in an outpatient setting. ---Baltimore is not a very appealing town even though I have been told that it is getting better. Hopkins is in a bad area of town and most residents commute 15-20 mins to work. ---EMG exposure is delayed to the end of PGY3 and in PGY4. ---Don?t know much about injection exposure. ---Relatively new programs but with a bright future. How was your interview day? Please summarize.:
Meet residents and PD the night before at an Italian Desert place. Excellent opportunity to mingle with the residents. Very well organized interview day. Started of with an orientation and power point presentation by Dr. Mayer and Dr. Palmer. There were two interview groups. One started at 8 and the other at 1. Probably 20+ in each group (2 FMG's. Both had completed there PM&R residency in India). Breakfast was provided. Interviews for the 8am group started at 9am. I had 3 interviews - 2 faculty and 1 nurse. Some ethical questions. Questions were read off from a list and were the standard q's asked at all programs. I was initially put off by the nurse who interviewed me as it was apparent that this was not used to interviewing and she had clearly not read my file. But she was nice and wanted to know more about how I would write orders, deal with staff and patients. Interviews finished at 11 and candidates were taken to a tour of Johns Hopkins Hospital, the outpatient clinic and Kennedy Krieger Institute. After the tour we had lunch. There were lots of opportunities to interact with faculty and residents. Everyone was very friendly and approachable. In conclusion It was an honor to walk through the old Hopkins Hospital. I will rank the program higher than I initially planned. There is room for improvement and I think the program will be one of the best in the nation in a few years. Report as inappropriate
