What impressed you positively?:
Current residents were overwhelmingly happy with the program in 2008. Apparently they had problems back in 2002-2003, all of which have been corrected. Hours are averaging 55/wk except in the 3 of the 4 ICU months. Then it's closer to 65 - 70 according to residents. There is a new chair (Debra Schwinn) who seems to have significant pull with the University. She's hired a big time pain specialist to lead rebuilding the pain center, and she is totally into making Washington a leading anesthesiology research center. No shortages of AGME case numbers. Plenty of opportunity for regional anesthesiology blocks. You can even go over to Virginia Mason for electives in regional. They noted that VM residents come to the University of Washington for grand rounds and the diadactic resident lectures. What more needs to be said about Seattle? High cost of housing, but it will be a blast to live here for three years if I can get in the program. Nice book/conference allowance each year, and an extra week annually to attend a conference of your choice. Report as inappropriate
What impressed you negatively?:
There are diadactic lectures only every third week for each class of residents, although they pointed out their pass rate on the boards is high 90% each year. The cost of Seattle housing is worrisome too. Still, all the residents said they were happy to be there. No free parking at the University (or anywhere else, it seems, in Seattle). How was your interview day? Please summarize.:
Early morning arrival at 7:30. Overview given by department chair herself, complete with a discussion of her vision for the program and for the specialty of anesthesiology. Followed by a presentation given by the program director. Then two one-on-one interviews, a box lunch and visits with the chief residents, then done by around noon. Report as inappropriate
