What impressed you positively?:
1. intimate, personal setting - very friendly PDs and devoted faculty know residents very well!; 2. very friendly residents, enthusiastic about the program and city; 3. local and international patients; 4. MOST AMAZING GYM with salt water pool, flat screen TVs on every machine, indoor track, digital locks on lockers, spinning classes, salsa dancing lessons, free personal training for ONLY $25/mos OR $15/mos if you work out frequently - yes, you get rewarded for increased workout frequency!!); 5. low cost of living - can buy a house!; 6. no clothing tax!; 7. world renown - Mayo brandname well-represented by strong surgical and medicine specialties; 8. 100% boards pass rate in past 2 years; 9. low amount of call (PL-1 – 7months, PL-2 – 4months, PL-3 – 2.5months; few months of 12-hr shifts in ED, etc.); 10. opportunities for national/international conferences - transportation/lodging funded by Mayo; 11. free catered lunch everyday +$1500 for call nights (residents usually have so much $ leftover that they treat med students for lunch); 12. everybody wears suits, scrubs+white coats when on call (available in locker); 13. can rotate at Mayo Jacksonville or Scotsdale if interested (housing/flight provided); 14. excellent fellowship placement in all specialties; 15. great opportunities for research b/c faculty are motivated to help you publish b/c of self-promotion (assistant prof = 30 pubs, associate prof = 60 pubs, getting a resident to be 1st author counts as 2 pubs toward promotion); 16. great location for outdoor activities: running, biking, snowmobiling, X-country skiing; 17. everything is connected by skyway/subway; 18. gorgeous simulation center; 19. TRANSLATORS IN PERSON! (vs. translator phone!) Report as inappropriate
What impressed you negatively?:
1. very small residency class (10 categorical + 2 peds neuro); 2. very little to do in Rochester, and Twin Cities are 90 minutes away; 3. wow, it is frigid; 4. PICU not always staffed by PICU attending - overnight crosscover by adult critical care fellow/attending, but it means that resident can do more procedures?; 5. 85 beds (including NICU) on one floor in large St. Mary's Hospital (1200+beds); 6. morning report or conference 3x/week (not daily); 7. will never build free-standing hospital b/c contradicts Mayo philosophy of integration Report as inappropriate
