How was your interview day? Please summarize.:
LOCATION - Mayo Florida is located near Jacksonville beach, Neptune beach and Ponte Vedra. (you can see the beach from the top floors), closer to the beach than downtown. Weather is 60-80s all year round, Think SoCal weather but more conservative, laid back, smaller, less touristy, suburban, and lower cost of living. I love the beach, palm trees, and the sun. Also an easy 2 hours drive to Disney World. 5 hours drive to miami. Surfing is possible here, however expect around 2-5 ft. waves. FACILITY - this place is problably the SWEETEST HOSPITAL IN THE U.S. Recently open in late 2008. CLEAN HUGE GORGEOUS CALL ROOMS, BREAK ROOMS, NEW COMPUTERS, CAFETERIA, ORs, WARDS, OFFICES, ALL EQUIPPED WITH THE LATEST TECHNOLOGY and DESIGNS. Seriously, this place is like a 5 stars hotel. I would rather sleep here than at my own home. This is not an inner city county hospital. SPECIALTY - I am interested in REGIONAL and PAIN, Mayo-Jax has both (stronger with REGIONAL). TRANSPLANT TEAM IS LEGENDARY - a quote from a patient "The Mayo Clinic in Jacksonville is the most amazing medical facility in the world; especially their transplant team. I am forever grateful to them. - Christine C., Bi-lateral lung transplant recipient 11/11/07". However, OB will be done at Wake Forest 1mo/year on an all expenses paid trip, a sacrifice I'm willing to make for beach living 11mo/year. FACULTY - lots of big names here. The mayo name will open doors for you in academia. CASES/HOURS - challenging cases-zebras get referred here, manageable hours. OVERALL - This is a very small program of 4 RESIDENTS/CLASS. Everyone here is very nice and down to earth. So I think they might be looking for a person who can get along with everybody since it is such a small class size. (1 bad apple is not as detrimental to a big program of 25+ per class but for a class size of 4...it can spoil the whole bag). CONCLUSION - Affordable Beach-side living, Great weather all year round, Mayo Name, Good training, Regional, Transplant, Gorgeous New Facility, Relatively new program with a very bright future, Mayo likes to recruit their own, Amazing Golf, Laid Back Single/ young couples, access to Cruise port in Jax, easy drive to disney world/daytona beach, NO HURRICANE (unlike south florida).
