"Great third and fourth year rotations. Faculty love to teach. University Hospital sees the worst of the worst in pathology. Culture is student-friendly and as a student you are expected to be hands-on and actively involved in patient care. You'll spend very little time standing in the corner shadowing. You will be well-prepared to become a great resident. Other things I love: flexible schedule MS1 & 2 with mostly optional attendance and recorded video lectures, 4th year is 100% electives, class collaboration and morale is great, MS2 ends in February thus giving you 4 months of extra time to do things like early rotations, step study, vacation, and research."
"Class is very large (~210s). Even after four years I still don't know all my classmates. Also, the "new" preclinical curriculum (2012) is mostly very good, but there's a handful of required team-based exercises every week that I felt were minimally helpful."

"3rd year: 8 weeks of medicine (some sub-specialty weeks built in), 8 weeks of surgery (4 weeks gen surg + 4 weeks sub-specialty), 6 weeks each of OBGYN, psych, family medicine, and pediatrics, and 4 weeks each of neurology and emergency medicine. You fill out a detailed preference form regarding the order you would like to do these mandatory rotations in, and then a lottery system is used to make it as fair as possible. 4th year: 100% elective. The only requirement is that you must do at least one month inpatient and one month outpatient."
"You are an important part of the team. You almost always round on your own and then present your patients with complete assessments and plans. You then see patients again with the resident/attending and agree upon a final plan. You are expected to be present and usually participate in any procedures or exams."
"University Hospital is a busy academic center that also serves as the county hospital. In addition to seeing academic "zebras" you also see the full process of diseases. Many of the patients haven't had any medical care in years and only arrive when their diseases are very advanced. The patient population, like San Antonio itself, is probably around 60% hispanic."
