Allergy and Immunology

Allergists/immunologists diagnose and treat patients who have asthma, allergic and immunologic conditions.

The work of clinical allergists is more familiar to the public than the more scientifically oriented activities of the immunologist, but both allergy and immunology are concerned with the human body's reaction to foreign substances, no matter what the practice setting. This is a sub- specialty of either internal medicine or pediatrics.

• Competitiveness of Fellowship - Medium
• Length of training - 4 years of medical school followed by a residency in internal medicine, pediatrics or med-peds. After successfully passing the certification examination of either the American Board of Pediatrics (ABP), the American Board of Internal Medicine (ABIM) or both, the physician must complete at least two additional years as a fellow in an accredited allergy-immunology training program. This qualifies the individual to take the American Board of Allergy and Immunology (ABAI) Certification Examination.
