Psychiatry

Psychiatrists are concerned with the prevention, diagnosis and treatment of mental and emotional disorders. Although many psychiatrists are generalists, there are different models of treatment - for example, individual or group therapy, a behavioral or psychoanalytic focus.

• Competitiveness of residency - Moderate
• Years of training required - Four years including a first year in internal medicine, family medicine, pediatrics or transitional training.
• Subspecialties/ Combined programs/Fellowships - One year fellowships are available in addiction psychiatry, pain medicine, forensic psychiatry and geriatric psychiatry. A fellowship in child and adolescent psychiatry can begin any time after the clinical first year but must include at least two years of general psychiatry for both allopathic and osteopathic physicians. Combined programs with internal medicine, family medicine, pediatrics, and neurology are available.
