"Commitment to education. While it's true that yes, the Mayo name will get you lots of places, especially in academia, while in residency you aren't the driving workforce for the program. Their focus is to educate you. No worthless add-on cases as residents get their pick, CRNAs get the rest. Usually out between 3-5pm depending on the day. Protected time for didactics. Ample time to study. Cush call schedule.
Facilities are AMAZING. Brand new hospital. OR's are spacious with the newest technology, call rooms are better than hotel rooms with flat screens and private bathrooms. Spacious resident lounge. This place is like a day spa.
Arguably one of the best regional experiences in the country. One of the top transplant programs, if not THE top. Robust TEE experience that can lead to certification if you'd like. Research opportunities readily available.
Check the faculty list here and you'll see that a lot of them wrote the classic Anesthesiology textbooks. Despite this, still a laid-back atmosphere. Very friendly, cordial. Seems like they are looking for people who will fit in with the group of people there and the Mayo model, more than just numbers. After all, it is only a class of 4. No uptight attitudes despite the Mayo name. It is beach living so everyone seems really happy and chilled out.
Can rotate in Minnesota and Arizona as well."

"I went in expecting the interviewers to be old-school/stuffy, but was pleasantly surprised at how down to earth all of the interviewers were. They were definitely not just looking for numbers, but instead for individuals who would fit in with the Mayo model of healthcare. The PD, Dr. De Ruyter, was very approachable and seemed like a strong resident advocate. Oh, and did I mention that THE HOSPITAL WAS AMAZING?? It is only 3 years old and they have amazing areas for the anesthesia residents including their own lounge with kitchen and flat screen as well as amazing call rooms that felt more like a hotel…each with their own bathroom and flat screen televisions. Also all of the ORs have electronic charting. They now have an agreement with one of the local Jacksonville hospitals for their OB rotation, but residents can still choose to rotate with travel expenses paid at Wake Forest since it is such a strong OB program. Residents can also rotate at both of the other Mayo sites in Rochester and Arizona. Strong Peds at Nemours Children Hospital in Jacksonville. Mayo Jacksonville is the largest liver transplant program in the nation and has one of the top regional and pain fellowships. Also several nationally recognized Anesthesiologists and textbook authors including Dr. Murray of “Morgan, Mikhail, and Murray” Lange text that every program uses…look in the front cover...I noticed this after returning from my interview."

"No trauma/OB/peds done on site. Not necessarily a bad thing, it's just that there's none of it on campus - you go to the local hospital in downtown Jax (inner city) and it's supposed to be a great experience. They don't hide this, it's just a normal component of the program. The fellowship is done at the same hospital.
No set educational stipend. But it seems like if you have a legitimate need for funds (books, conferences) they pay for it.
Didn't pay for hotel."

"No resident educational stipend/no provided text books
One of the only programs that did not pay for Hotel for interview
No resident interviewers

"Laid back dinner the night before with applicants and 3-4 residents.
Get to Mayo the next day on your own, small breakfast and presentation by PD. Half go to interviews, half go to the tour (amazing). Interviews are very low-stress, just trying to get to know you and your aspirations. I was intimidated by the Mayo name at first but it was really pretty informal. Standard questions, nothing out of the blue. Lunch, and then switch groups, and that's it.
Fun day, one of the best interview experiences. Seems like an up and coming residency esp now that the new hospital has been built and everything is in one place. Has really strong points (regional, transplant, teaching, technology, the Mayo name!) and is in an AMAZING location considering this is residency. Ranked it very very high."

"NIGHT BEFORE: casual dinner with residents, they all seemed very open and honest about the program and they all seemed happy. Several showed up which made me comfortable with their work hour policy.
INTERVIEW DAY: started at 7:30, breakfast provided and welcome/overview from the PD. Then 3 (approximately 15 min each) interviews with 3 faculty, followed by tour of the facility and lunch. Half of us toured while the other half interviewed. There were approximately 10 interviewees, and they interview a total of approximately 50 candidates each year for their 4 spots. I was only pimped once during the day by one of the older faculty members who went around the table at lunch and asked us all what type of research we were working on…most of the applicants had completed research."

"LOCATION - Mayo Florida is located near Jacksonville beach, Neptune beach and Ponte Vedra. (you can see the beach from the top floors), closer to the beach than downtown. Weather is 60-80s all year round, Think SoCal weather but more conservative, laid back, smaller, less touristy, suburban, and lower cost of living. I love the beach, palm trees, and the sun. Also an easy 2 hours drive to Disney World. 5 hours drive to miami. Surfing is possible here, however expect around 2-5 ft. waves.
FACILITY - this place is problably the SWEETEST HOSPITAL IN THE U.S. Recently open in late 2008. CLEAN HUGE GORGEOUS CALL ROOMS, BREAK ROOMS, NEW COMPUTERS, CAFETERIA, ORs, WARDS, OFFICES, ALL EQUIPPED WITH THE LATEST TECHNOLOGY and DESIGNS. Seriously, this place is like a 5 stars hotel. I would rather sleep here than at my own home. This is not an inner city county hospital.
SPECIALTY - I am interested in REGIONAL and PAIN, Mayo-Jax has both (stronger with REGIONAL). TRANSPLANT TEAM IS LEGENDARY - a quote from a patient "The Mayo Clinic in Jacksonville is the most amazing medical facility in the world; especially their transplant team. I am forever grateful to them. - Christine C., Bi-lateral lung transplant recipient 11/11/07". However, OB will be done at Wake Forest 1mo/year on an all expenses paid trip, a sacrifice I'm willing to make for beach living 11mo/year.
FACULTY - lots of big names here. The mayo name will open doors for you in academia.
CASES/HOURS - challenging cases-zebras get referred here, manageable hours.
OVERALL - This is a very small program of 4 RESIDENTS/CLASS. Everyone here is very nice and down to earth. So I think they might be looking for a person who can get along with everybody since it is such a small class size. (1 bad apple is not as detrimental to a big program of 25+ per class but for a class size of 4...it can spoil the whole bag).
CONCLUSION - Affordable Beach-side living, Great weather all year round, Mayo Name, Good training, Regional, Transplant, Gorgeous New Facility, Relatively new program with a very bright future, Mayo likes to recruit their own, Amazing Golf, Laid Back Single/ young couples, access to Cruise port in Jax, easy drive to disney world/daytona beach, NO HURRICANE (unlike south florida).
