School Info

The Doctor in Dental Surgery program is a fully-accredited four year program, designed to graduate competent general dentists, who will be ethical, compassionate, caring, knowledgeable and skilled practitioners. The program provides instruction in medical sciences, dental diagnostic sciences, preventive dentistry, communications and clinical dentistry. The curriculum emphasizes the integration of the biological, behavioural and dental sciences with the introduction to patient treatment in the first year of the program. There is a major emphasis on the biological and behavioural sciences as applied to clinical dentistry with basic foundation sciences continuing in the third and fourth years at advanced level. Clinical patient treatment receives greater emphasis in the second year, with continued emphasis on integration of the biological and behavioural sciences. Students practice a total patient philosophy in the third and fourth year clinic, within clinical-oriented disciplines. Third and fourth year dental students and second year dental hygiene students work together in the clinical program to provide a team approach to total patient care. Dental assistants are provided, and students are given experience in four-handed dentistry and working with allied dental personnel.

Curriculum

Small class sizes and individualized attention from faculty ensure that each student is challenged throughout the course of their studies. Our faculty members are world-renowned within their fields of specialty, and they are teaching at Dalhousie because of a great desire to contribute both to our students` education and to the field of dentistry.

About the LizzyM Score

LizzyM, SDN Moderator and medical school admissions committee member, is the inventor of the LizzyM Score. The score allows you to see if you are a competitive applicant at a given school. If your LizzyM Score is far below or above the average, you may not be a good fit. If your score is far below, your application may be screened out due to numerical cutoffs. If it is far above, the school may assume they are your “safety” school and that you won’t attend if they offer an acceptance. This score should be used only as a guide to help you select schools and is not a guarantee of acceptance at any school. If you use this as your sole criteria to select medical schools to apply to, you don’t deserve to get in anyway.
