School Info

American University of the Caribbean School of Medicine was founded in 1978, upon a belief in the need for visionary, skilled, compassionate doctors. AUC was originally chartered by the Government of Montserrat in the British West Indies. In 1995 Montserrat's Soufrière Hills Volcano, which had been dormant throughout recorded history, came to life in an eruption that left much of the island buried and the southern half of the island uninhabitable. AUC then relocated to the beautiful island of St. Maarten, a location with a standard of living that is unparalleled in the Caribbean.Three years later, in 1998, the School of Medicine completed a new multi-million-dollar teaching and learning facility featuring state-of-the-art classrooms and laboratories, a virtual imaging anatomy lab, a microbiology lab, and a comprehensive medical library. In 2002, AUC’s modern one and two-bedroom student dormitory was constructed.Over the past 30 years, AUC has grown in numbers and in stature. We have established partnerships with clinical sites in the United States and England. With unparalleled instruction and rigorous training, each day at AUC provides a fresh chance to live our mission of preserving, transmitting, and applying humanity's accumulated medical knowledge and clinical skills to develop graduates whose accomplishments attest to their intellectual discipline. As a result, in the years since AUC’s founding, more than 4,000 graduated physicians have made a significant impact in the field of medicine in countries around the world.

Curriculum

American University of the Caribbean’s medical school curriculum consists of 9.5 semesters: 5 semesters of Basic Medical Sciences taught at the St. Maarten campus, and 4.5 semesters of Clinical Sciences taught at affiliated hospitals in the United States and England. Rolling admission begins January, May, and September with semester terms of 16 weeks in duration.

Facilities

AUC's medical campus is located in the reputable world-class tourist destination of St. Maarten, where English is commonly spoken and the standard of living is unsurpassed in the Caribbean. Student housing includes new and fully furnished apartments with ocean views, kitchen facilities, and recreational amenities that are within a 5-minute walk to campus. Student resources include a student government association, organizations, clubs, and services as well as a diverse student body and active student life.

About the LizzyM Score

LizzyM, SDN Moderator and medical school admissions committee member, is the inventor of the LizzyM Score. The score allows you to see if you are a competitive applicant at a given school. If your LizzyM Score is far below or above the average, you may not be a good fit. If your score is far below, your application may be screened out due to numerical cutoffs. If it is far above, the school may assume they are your “safety” school and that you won’t attend if they offer an acceptance. This score should be used only as a guide to help you select schools and is not a guarantee of acceptance at any school. If you use this as your sole criteria to select medical schools to apply to, you don’t deserve to get in anyway.
