The practicing was the most helpful as the interviewers managed to ask most questions slightly differently than expected, so it helped to have to practice answering questions I hadn't prepared for." More from this Member | Report Response

"I read the interview feedback for multiple schools and tried to think of specific situations that related to the various questions. I also read some of the human medical interview questions for comparison and searched online for behavior questions related to Veterinary School interviews." More from this Member | Report Response

"I looked through all the previous interview feedbacks. I basically copied and pasted them into a word document and then went through all the questions with two of my close friends. Every singly question they asked was on that sheet." More from this Member | Report Response

"Read interview feedback on SDN. Read behavior questions from other sites. Read ISU's webiste about qualities they are looking for in students. Prepared questions to ask interviewers at end of interview. (READ SDN!! 99% of the questions they asked me came from this pool of previous questions!)" More from this Member | Report Response

"Read the website. There is a list of qualities that they check off. I made a list of experiences and what I learned from each. It is strictly behavioral so no research!" More from this Member | Report Response

"Read all the Iowa interview feedbacks and prepared answers for behavioral questions. Also studied the Illinois interview information page." More from this Member | Report Response

"Reviewed SDN and internet for behavioral type questions, and reviewed life/ experience situations that had significant impact on me personally" More from this Member | Report Response

"Looked on schools website. Thought about possible questions that would be asked based on the important qualities that they would be asking about (this is on the website). Thought about examples that I would use to demonstrate the desired qualities that were listed on website." More from this Member | Report Response

"Looked up behavioral-type questions, chose from certain experiences what I wanted the interviewers to know about and formulated how I could answer questions relating to those experiences to showcase certain qualities about myself, practiced answering them out loud, and practiced interviewing with family, friends, and in a mock interview with a professional. " More from this Member | Report Response

"Tried to prepare for a behavioral interview. I Hated it! They seem like they are really hard to prepare for and questions come across as quite personal." More from this Member | Report Response

"I read the school information and thought about my experiences in school and work in terms of problem-solving." More from this Member | Report Response

"Read about some types of questions for behavioral based interviews. Any list of general behavioral based interview questions should prepare you well for the types of questions I was asked in this interview. "The interviewers were very friendly and we had a nice conversation." More from this Member | Report Response

"I really liked how many opportunities there were for hands-on experience, and the students were really welcoming. I liked how honest everyone was about the difficulties that students experience, too - financing, etc. Everyone, including the interviewers, really wanted to have an open dialog about Iowa's program, and the focus was just as much on whether Iowa is a good fit for the candidates as whether the candidates would be a good fit for Iowa. Also, the students seem really supportive of each other, instead of competing with each other like students at some other schools do." More from this Member | Report Response

"The doctors who interviewed me were extremely kind, knowledgeable, and were able to teach me about student opportunities to teach and be involved in research." More from this Member | Report Response

"The faculty were all very accommodating and friendly. The brand new facilities are also very up to date..the small animal waiting room (even though my interest is equine) was very modern and forward-thinking." More from this Member | Report Response

"very helpful. I couldn't make it to the school due to weather so we ended up skyping during my interview time." More from this Member | Report Response

"The new hospitals are AMAZING. Truly better than those at the other schools I've been to so far (Penn, Cornell, and Ohio State). The staff and students are incredibly friendly. Plus, the interviewers are private practicing vets from the community who graduated from Iowa and love the school so much. There's so much school loyalty." More from this Member | Report Response

"The interviewers were friendly and took turns asking questions so you didn't have that awkwardness of having people sitting in the room taking notes that you weren't interacting with at all." More from this Member | Report Response

"The beautiful new small animal and large animal facilities. Gorgeous!" More from this Member | Report Response

"The tour, we got to see most of the new small animal clinic that is pretty awesome!" More from this Member | Report Response

"The new large animal facility and the people (very friendly and nice!)" More from this Member | Report Response

"The new hospital." More from this Member | Report Response

"Staff, interviewers, students were warm, friendly, and helpful. No question was too dumb and like everyone else on here already said, they try to create an experience that isn't too terrifying to see the real you." More from this Member | Report Response

"Great large animal facilities." More from this Member | Report Response

"Extremely friendly admissions staff and interviewers." More from this Member | Report Response

"The large animal facilities were amazing and all the people were extremely friendly. The interviewers made me feel extremely comfortable." More from this Member | Report Response

"Faculty and staff were friendly! They made you feel like they actually wanted you there and put considerable effort into making you feeel comfortable and at ease. The interview date was scheduled (there were several options for activities arranged so that you could participate no matter when your interview was. I interviewed at another school and you basically showed up, interviewed, and left. No scheduled interactions with current students, faculty, or Q and A session)." More from this Member | Report Response

"Everyone was SO nice. It was very well organized and Dr. Howard even sought me out during a financial aid presentation to direct me to a faculty member who wanted to meet me and tell me about the area I was interested in. Very thoughtful. Also, the school's impressive reputation for academic quality." More from this Member | Report Response

"Everyone was really nice!" More from this Member | Report Response

"Friendliness of people at the school." More from this Member | Report Response

"The large animal facility, the friendliness of everyone and the amount of information about veterinary school and veterinary careers I was able to obtain that day. They are very kind, helpful people." More from this Member | Report Response

"The facilities were great! And the staff were very friendly and helpful. " More from this Member | Report Response

"All the staff and most students were very very friendly, seems like there are a huge number of clubs, teachers/clinicians seem very involved and interested in helping students learn, student community seems cooperative rather than competitive." More from this Member | Report Response

"The dean, the interviewers, and the students were all very relaxed, nice and funny. They had all the morning interviewees together in a room with current vet students that we could talk to and relax with. Offered beverages and breakfast. Also, the integrated computer system they use is very high-tech and convenient for vet students." More from this Member | Report Response

"The friendliness of the ENTIRE CITY OF AMES." More from this Member | Report Response

"The commitment of the faculty, interviewers, and students to make the interview as low-stress as possible. Everything was very laid back." More from this Member | Report Response

"Facilities" More from this Member | Report Response

"They are very very friendly laid back and just wanted to know about you and how you react to situations in life. The school is very nice with brand new large animal facilities." More from this Member | Report Response

"ISU has a brand new Veterinary Medical Center that is just beautiful and nicely done, everyone was just so helpful and seemed happy to be there, and I also found out that ISU does live and terminal surgeries that I think are very useful and actually may have been the big thing to change my idea of what school I'm interested in going to." More from this Member | Report Response

"The staff and students were very personable and helpful and reassuring. The new hospital facilities are AMAZING!" More from this Member | Report Response

"Everyone was so friendly. The new facilities were very nice. " More from this Member | Report Response

"The current students and tour guide seemed genuinely nice and friendly. The Dean was very warm and is very proud of the school and its accomplishments. New large animal facilities were great!" More from this Member | Report Response

"The students talk to you as you are waiting for the interview were great! I also had a problem with my flight out being delayed and the staff was very helpful in rearranging the schedule. Everyone seemed relly friendly. Also very helpful was a seminar with financial aid." More from this Member | Report Response

"Dr. Howard, the Dean of Admissions made everyone felt very welcome. I enjoyed the interview process. It was very organized. The only stressful part was the interview, once I got over that, I love the tours of Ames and the school." More from this Member | Report Response

"The enthusiasm of the Dean, and his plans to increase the schools visibility (and rankings). The school has a very aggressive plan, and they are making good progress on achieving their goals. The enthusiasm of the research-oriented faculty. Ames is a nice small town (good for me, maybe bad for someone else). The awesome research equipment/facilities available on other parts of campus besides the vet school." More from this Member | Report Response

What impressed you negatively?

"Nothing!" More from this Member | Report Response

"Vet students are not in the hospital really at all until 4th year." More from this Member | Report Response

"Neither of my interviewers were from Iowa State, so they said it wouldn't make sense to ask them about the school." More from this Member | Report Response

"The only thing I could say was that I wish they had more of an opportunity for a meet-and-greet, although the student panel was so informal it kind of seemed that way." More from this Member | Report Response

"The student giving the tour was a first-year, so she wasn't very knowledgeable about opportunities that students get or faculty that have been affiliated with the school, or specialties that ISU excels in, etc." More from this Member | Report Response

"The school tour was absolutely unimpressive. And the fact that 70% of students live in trailer parks freaked me out" More from this Member | Report Response

"I arrived about 2 hours early since I wanted to be present for the morning student panel (which I would have missed in the afternoon because of my interview/tour times) and the check in door was locked. Not knowing what to do, I found a student outside who was super friendly and let me inside and took me where I needed to be. The woman in charge was VERY annoyed I was early, chewed me out because she wasn't expecting me, and told me I should have contacted her days earlier to let her know. Another interviewee was in the same boat so I didn't feel so bad. But this woman was so rude and it certainly wasn't the warm welcome I was expecting especially since there was a discrepancy on their end with the schedule." More from this Member | Report Response

"My tour guide was only a first-year student and in addition to having not used many of the areas of school & hospital yet, she was not very knowledgeable at all." More from this Member | Report Response

"You definitely need a car if you move there. Things are very spread out and taxis are $$$" More from this Member | Report Response

"Students aren't encouraged to go see interesting cases/ watch surgeries when they are not in clinics." More from this Member | Report Response

"I didn't get to see as much of the facilities as I wanted, but It was just finishing the construction! (Now it's gorgeous :) ) Also, the wait for feedback will feel like forever, be ready to have some patience!" More from this Member | Report Response

"The room they put us in as "home-base" was kind of tight and not an optimal seating arrangement." More from this Member | Report Response

"That you HAVE to buy the specific computer they want you to use. I'm a Mac user and not a huge fan of PCs." More from this Member | Report Response

"The location. It's difficult to get to/from." More from this Member | Report Response

"I was disappointed that they asked a couple of questions that I had already addressed in previous answers and wanted me to further expand or think of yet another example. I wish that had asked a wider variety of questions." More from this Member | Report Response

"I gonna have to buy stock in carhart cause its cold" More from this Member | Report Response

"The cold weather" More from this Member | Report Response

"The current students weren't as excited or welcoming as those at other schools I interviewed at." More from this Member | Report Response

"Out of state tuition for all 4 years." More from this Member | Report Response

"Old small animal facilities." More from this Member | Report Response

"Small-animal hospital wasn't terribly impressive, but they are renovating it and will be done by 2012." More from this Member | Report Response

"The location of the school, I grew up in a small town and then moved to a city for my undergrad...so I'm not looking forward to moving back to a city with a small town feel." More from this Member | Report Response

"Nothing! My experience as ISU has become the "standard" that I compare other schools to." More from this Member | Report Response

"The large class size and the alleged cliqueyness that the students said existed in their classes." More from this Member | Report Response

"Someone else previously mentioned that the small animal facilities were not the best, but they are in the process of overhauling them." More from this Member | Report Response

"Nothing" More from this Member | Report Response

"I hate closed file behavioral interviews. They're really awkward." More from this Member | Report Response

"COLD!" More from this Member | Report Response

"The behavioral interview style, and the short tour that was basically just hallways, not facilities. Also, you can't get Iowa residency if you don't start out with it." More from this Member | Report Response

"There were not as many current students walking around talking to interviewees as there were at other interviews I was at. " More from this Member | Report Response

"The old small/large animal hospital is a bit dingy looking. Sort of dark and beat up, but still does the job." More from this Member | Report Response

"Incredibly icy roads!!! Also, minimal hands-on animal experience built into the curriculum during the first couple years." More from this Member | Report Response

"New small animal hospital has not been started, although their new large animal hospital is amazing." More from this Member | Report Response

"Nothing...." More from this Member | Report Response

"Nothing." More from this Member | Report Response

"Location" More from this Member | Report Response

"Small town if you are not used to that type of setting. Very rural." More from this Member | Report Response

"Most of the students needed to buy a trailer to live in the trailer park behind the school and I'm not looking forward to buying a $5-25,000 trailer my first year" More from this Member | Report Response

"Nothing really. The tour of the school could have been a little less bland. Dr. Howard did a good job, but IMO, 2 people are needed to keep things more organized." More from this Member | Report Response

"Nothing. I had a great time!" More from this Member | Report Response

"It was very flat! lol Actually the school was very impressive only down is they did not choose me." More from this Member | Report Response

"I interviewed on a Saturday, so I know that classes and most procedures were not in session. The school tour went through the small and large animal clinics. I wish I had seen more activites. I did meet the school cow and got to rub his head and nose :-) I know that some tours got to observe spay and neuter procedures of feral cat colonies. I can't wait to get accepted into a vet school so I can work with animals all day and night long. One other thing... I really wanted to buy a Iowa State Vet-Med shirt but the bookstore did not carry it." More from this Member | Report Response

"It was cold, very cold (but that is fine). I barely got out of there before a huge winter storm hit." More from this Member | Report Response

What did you wish you had known ahead of time?

"Nothing! Iowa provided a lot of details about the process ahead of time, which I was very grateful for. It made the day of less stressful." More from this Member | Report Response

"They only asked me 5-6 questions. Spend time on your answers since the interview is scheduled to be an hour you can go into more detail. Come with lots of questions for alumni (it seemed most interviewers were)." More from this Member | Report Response

"More about the differences between the Nebraska interview process and questions compared to the main campus." More from this Member | Report Response

"I felt fairly prepared" More from this Member | Report Response

"I wish I had come up with more examples of how I had been creative and thought out-of-the box." More from this Member | Report Response

"Not to schedule my interview for 11, but for an earlier time so I could attend the financial aid session." More from this Member | Report Response

"That almost all the students interviewing were going to be small animal or mixed animal practice emphasis. As an equine emphasis I felt very out of place asking equine related questions." More from this Member | Report Response

"That you would be led to every part of the interview day. I was worried that I wouldn't be able to find my interview room, or where the tour started, but people came to get me from our "home base" for each activity." More from this Member | Report Response

"If you have an afternoon interview, you need to follow the afternoon check-in time and schedule because the school's a locked down facility so you won't be able to get in early." More from this Member | Report Response

"Nothing - I felt very well prepared." More from this Member | Report Response

"To rent a car. It was almost $20 to taxi 2 miles down the road to the vet school from my hotel (one way)" More from this Member | Report Response

"They aren't just being accommodating by saying you can change before your tour. Do it! I wish I had." More from this Member | Report Response

"Really bring comfortable shoes if you are in heels. They suggest it, but don't feel bad taking up the offer. The tour is an hour long so you want your feet to be comfy." More from this Member | Report Response

"Bring some comfy shoes for the tours! There'll be lots of walking!" More from this Member | Report Response

"Relax and seriously look at the questions posted here" More from this Member | Report Response

"How many interviewers I would have. For some reason I assumed I would have at least 3. 2 interviewers was pretty intimate and threw me off at first." More from this Member | Report Response

"That everyone, including the interviewers, would be so friendly." More from this Member | Report Response

"That all of the time spent there would be indoors and didn't require ever going outside (aside from arriving and departing) so I didn't need my snow boots after all!" More from this Member | Report Response

"How surprised I was going to be." More from this Member | Report Response

"That you could change after your interview into more comfortable clothes for the tour" More from this Member | Report Response

"Nothing." More from this Member | Report Response

"That they'd really only ask a few behavioral questions. I felt like we'd just gotten started and they were already asking me if I had any final comments or questions." More from this Member | Report Response

"I wish that I had known all of the interview questions, but that's not possible so...." More from this Member | Report Response

"The interview is really relaxed. I tend to stress-out about public speaking and was totally at ease. Glad I found the interview feedback--I might not have done as well if I hadn't been familiar with the questions." More from this Member | Report Response

"I felt pretty prepared, actually." More from this Member | Report Response

"That I was more stressed out than I needed to be!" More from this Member | Report Response

"It really is a chill interview. Don't worry too much. Just think of things/stories that you want to tell them. it's that easy." More from this Member | Report Response

"That most of the students buy trailers and live in the neighboring trailerpark. I mean I'm sure they have a great time but still, I have a hard time envisioning myself living in a low rent trailer park." More from this Member | Report Response

"How to drive in snow." More from this Member | Report Response

"What is there to do in Iowa???? " More from this Member | Report Response

"The time difference between where I live and Iowa was 2 hours, so when I had to meet at the school at 7:15am Iowa time, it was actually 5:15am in California." More from this Member | Report Response

"There is no need to stress about an interview like this." More from this Member | Report Response

"I can't think of anything." More from this Member | Report Response

"Not much, I didn't feel unprepared or surprised at all." More from this Member | Report Response

"The personal characteristic criteria for applicants that was made available after the interview." More from this Member | Report Response

"Nothing. All of the questions that I was asked I had seen in some form or another. " More from this Member | Report Response

"That the interview was a cold interview. i.e. the interviewers knew nothing about me prior to the interview." More from this Member | Report Response

"Everything was as expected." More from this Member | Report Response

What are your general comments?

"Review the SDN interview feedback questions! All my questions were from those on here so I already had my answers prepared for them." More from this Member | Report Response

"They were really friendly and tried to make it less stressful, while still being a formal interview." More from this Member | Report Response

"Overall I had a really positive experience. Told some stories to get the interviewers laughing and generally had a good experience with the interview." More from this Member | Report Response

"If you take the time to look over the types of questions that will be asked you should do fine. The interviewers are very friendly and make the experience pleasant." More from this Member | Report Response

"Had a nice time, very low stress. Excited to hear back from admissions!" More from this Member | Report Response

"I loved this school! I had no idea how great Iowa could be ( coming from FL) but I am so impressed. The students have so many opportunities for hands on experience all 4 years aside from curriculum and the professors take you in as a part of the family." More from this Member | Report Response

"Good school, good faculty...similar to other schools I have applied/accepted to with the exception of being a cheaper option." More from this Member | Report Response

"Not a great first impression and very turned off" More from this Member | Report Response

"Don't stress. I have had job interviews harder than this interview." More from this Member | Report Response

"I wish there were more vet students and faculty involved in the interview day agenda. Besides those conducting the interviews, there were only 2 other faculty members there." More from this Member | Report Response

"The school is a little on the older side, but the hospitals (large and small) are very new and very nice. Neither person that interviewed me was part of the faculty, they were both returning alumni." More from this Member | Report Response

"School is very state-of-the-art and people are very friendly. However, Ames is not my idea of best place to live by any means; small even for a college town and most of the students apparently live in a trailer park behind the vet school." More from this Member | Report Response

"ABSOLUTELY beautiful renovations to all the hospitals and classrooms!! Everyone was so friendly! Making the decision much harder for next year!!" More from this Member | Report Response

"While the interview was pretty laid back and conversational, you are going to be asked to give examples of SPECIFIC instances that fit the question. Make sure you have some good general experiences lined up that will apply to multiple scenarios in case you can't think of one." More from this Member | Report Response

"Such a great experience!! ISU does a great job of making it a very comfortable experience!" More from this Member | Report Response

"Just take a breath, it isn't that bad :)" More from this Member | Report Response

"Great place!" More from this Member | Report Response

"Everyone including the interviewers were very nice and welcoming. Preparing for the interview will help bring down the stress of interviewing a lot. I was very impressed by the teaching facilities. Looks like a great school to consider!" More from this Member | Report Response

"While the school happens to be in a city that gets pretty cold in the winter, everything is interconnected so you never have to go outside! I think that's just wonderful and saves having to change shoes all the time." More from this Member | Report Response

"Don't be nervous at all for this interview. It was beyond easy. They really do just want to see you for who you are. Your character is all they're looking for." More from this Member | Report Response

"Very impressed by their facilities and the variety of opportunities to get more experience between organizations and traveling abroad. Everyone was welcoming and relaxed." More from this Member | Report Response

"The people here are amazing. Made me feel welcome and everyone went more than out of their way to make me feel comfortable. The interview is really relaxed and conversational. Just be prepared to talk and be yourself. The new Large animal hospital is awesome and a new small animal hospital will be done in fall of 2012. I had come out to Iowa without much expectations but I walked away absolutely loving it." More from this Member | Report Response

"I went out there not really expecting to like the school and came back in love with it :)" More from this Member | Report Response

"Great school!" More from this Member | Report Response

"I would definitely recommend this college!!!" More from this Member | Report Response

"ISU was not my first choice school until I visited. If you're not sure, give it a chance!" More from this Member | Report Response

"I really liked the school! They also have an emphasis on pathology, which is my area of interest." More from this Member | Report Response

"Impressive place. Makes you feel welcome. And, it is in fact cold." More from this Member | Report Response

"The new large animal facility is beautiful, but the school is so expensive for OOS that I'm not very sure how realistic of an option it would be for me without taking on critical amounts of debt." More from this Member | Report Response

"Overall it was nice. Stayed at the Microtel where they had a very friendly desk clerk (Tabby) who helped me find my way to the vet school, find places to eat, buy stuff, etc. Additionally the room was quite nice with a flat screen TV, wireless internet, etc. For $56 it was a very nice hotel. Don't rent a KIA Sportege. What a waste. Leave at least an hour early before when you plan to leave so if you do what I did, and come out to a car that won't start, you'll still be on time." More from this Member | Report Response

"Well worth the time, I learned a lot from faculty, students and interviewers, who were very forthcoming in talking to me about their own careers and research." More from this Member | Report Response

"My interviewers were great and the interview was actually enjoyable. Just relax and be yourself!" More from this Member | Report Response

"Maybe not my first choice school, but I definitely think I could go here and enjoy it!" More from this Member | Report Response

"Iowa State is making great strides in improving their facilities. Everyone--up to and including the dean--is highly committed to ensuring that students succeed. " More from this Member | Report Response

"Professors/clinicians were amazing! Nice people." More from this Member | Report Response

"For infectious disease and public health research, I highly recommend this school. They are very well know for this and are very proud of it and the opportunities for students are various." More from this Member | Report Response

"It seems like a really good school. The students have said that they feel well prepared, the doctors are very proud of the students and the new facilities. The only downside in my mind is with the distance from my home (PA), the weather which is COLD! and the whole trailer park thing. Other than that, it seems like a really top-notch, good school." More from this Member | Report Response

"Overall a great experience. I really hope I get in!" More from this Member | Report Response

"Make sure you look at the qualities that they list on the website. They will ask questions and want examples for each of the categories listed." More from this Member | Report Response

"I had a great experience at Iowa. Thinking back, I wished that I told my interviewers more about my hard-core science experiences. We mostly talked about my managerial experiences due to the way the questions were framed. I wish I balanced my soft and hard science background better. The only downside is that I am OOS (i.e. tuition). " More from this Member | Report Response

"ISU is a great school that is actively improving. They support students who are interested in research. The student guides, staff and faculty were all very friendly, helpful and enthusiastic." More from this Member | Report Response
