Application Service

School Info

The three primary goals of the School are teaching, scholarly activity and service. Teaching efforts are related to the professional degree program culminating in the Doctor of Optometry (O.D.) degree, the graduate program in vision science at both the Master of Science and Ph.D. levels or various combined degree programs such as those leading to the O.D./MS, O.D./PhD., and O.D./M.P.H. degrees. The school also has excellent postdoctoral clinical education programs in the forms of residencies, fellowship and continuing education.

Curriculum

The professional program in the School of Optometry requires four years of full-time study and leads to the Doctor of Optometry (O.D.) degree. The curriculum is designed to give the student a very strong foundation in the basic health and basic vision sciences and in-depth training in all aspects of optometric clinical sciences. The school is an integral part of the university and the UAB Academic Health Sciences Center and can take advantage of the many human and physical resources available in such an environment to supplement its own facilities and outstanding faculty. Graduates of this program are equipped with the basic clinical skills that allow them to practice in any region of the country and in any setting, as well as with the intellectual skills that allow lifelong professional development. This program is widely recognized as one of the leading programs in the profession of optometry both nationally and internationally.

Facilities

The Henry B. Peters building is a 70,000 square foot facility, located in the UAB Academic Health Center, which comprises a major part of the east end of the University campus. The physical facilities that house the School were designed specifically for the education and training of optometry students, the provision of clinical optometric services, faculty research, and the effective administration and support of the missions of the institution. Located on the ground floor of the facility is a 30,000 square foot multidisciplinary clinic, with state-of-the-art equipment to provide care in a number of subspecialties. Comprehensive eye examinations are provided in the Primary Care Optometry Service, and there is a state-of-the-art Optical Service with the latest in eyewear and ophthalmic lenses. Other specialty services include Cornea and Contact Lenses, Pediatric Optometry, Binocular Vision and Visual Perception, and Ocular Disease and Low Vision Rehabilitation. Also located in the Henry B. Peters Building are faculty offices, research and teaching laboratories, classrooms, seminar rooms, and teaching clinics.

About the LizzyM Score

LizzyM, SDN Moderator and medical school admissions committee member, is the inventor of the LizzyM Score. The score allows you to see if you are a competitive applicant at a given school. If your LizzyM Score is far below or above the average, you may not be a good fit. If your score is far below, your application may be screened out due to numerical cutoffs. If it is far above, the school may assume they are your “safety” school and that you won’t attend if they offer an acceptance. This score should be used only as a guide to help you select schools and is not a guarantee of acceptance at any school. If you use this as your sole criteria to select medical schools to apply to, you don’t deserve to get in anyway.
