School Info

The school prides itself in attracting some of the best students from the United States and from around the world to its professional program. Graduates of the professional program are extremely competitive for the most prestigious residency programs in the country. The school has an established residency program in optometric specialties including contact lenses, ocular disease, binocular vision/pediatric optometry, low vision, and primary eye care. Many of them have gone on to excel in private practice and some are enjoying careers in optometric educationfollowing the completion of their residency programs.

Curriculum

The professional optometry curriculum includes instruction in all of the clinical and practical phases of optometry as well as in the theoretical and fundamental aspects of vision science. It requires four years of professional courses, including a three-week summer assignment prior to the third year and rotations to external clinic settings during the final year. The university schedules two regular academic semesters and two summer sessions. Most optometry courses are scheduled for a full academic semester. Some, however, are scheduled for three, six, or eight weeks, and will be scheduled back-to-back with other courses that will be taken in the remaining weeks of the semester.

Facilities

n addition to the main Atwater Eye Care Center, the school operates the Community Eye Care Center on the west side of Bloomington. In 1992, the School of Optometry opened the Indianapolis Eye Care Center (IECC) in a newly constructed building at 501 Indiana Avenue in Indianapolis. Offering an expanded scope of patient care services, the IECC is located near the campus of Indiana University-Purdue University at Indianapolis. Additional clinical facilities are in Veterans Administration and military hospitals and community care centers in other cities, to provide external clinic rotations for fourth-year optometry students.

About the LizzyM Score

LizzyM, SDN Moderator and medical school admissions committee member, is the inventor of the LizzyM Score. The score allows you to see if you are a competitive applicant at a given school. If your LizzyM Score is far below or above the average, you may not be a good fit. If your score is far below, your application may be screened out due to numerical cutoffs. If it is far above, the school may assume they are your “safety” school and that you won’t attend if they offer an acceptance. This score should be used only as a guide to help you select schools and is not a guarantee of acceptance at any school. If you use this as your sole criteria to select medical schools to apply to, you don’t deserve to get in anyway.
