What impressed you positively?

Applicants were impressed by the friendly and welcoming attitude of students and administrative staff, as well as the ability of the institution to attract graduate students despite challenges.

What impressed you negatively?

Applicants were commonly unimpressed by aspects such as relatively poor funding, feeling like a backup school, long waiting times during the interview day, and concerns about the program's focus on gifted and talented assessment. They also noted negative comments from professors and feedback indicating widespread dissatisfaction among students. Suggestions included addressing funding disparities, improving interview day experiences, revising program focus, and enhancing faculty-student communication and satisfaction.
  • Relatively poor funding compared to other schools I applied to. At times during the interview, I felt that people hinted that this was a backup school for me (which was true, but awkward to bring up). Also, my interview was scheduled so that I was done interviewing by 10am but had to sit in the common room until about 4 pm. Seemed like practicum consisted of way too much gifted & talented assessment - but that the faculty were responsive to student feedback on this and were trying to change it.
  • One professor said, ''I like research that makes good conversation at cocktail parties.'' Another said that all of the students hate the program. All of them?? Yes, all of them.

What did you wish you had known ahead of time?

Applicants commonly wished they had known more details about the level of funding available and about the overall student experience and satisfaction before making their decision.

What are your general comments?

Applicants commonly found the experience reminiscent of the TV show "The Office," indicating a humorous and possibly awkward atmosphere.

What are your suggestions for the admissions office?
