How did you prepare for the interview?
Applicants commonly prepared for the interview by reading papers provided by the potential advisor and reviewing faculty profiles to familiarize themselves with the research interests of the interviewers. This research-oriented preparation helped them demonstrate a strong understanding of the subject matter and tailor their responses effectively during the interview.
Applicants were impressed by the positive and welcoming atmosphere within the department, including the friendly students and engaging professors. They also highlighted the excellent research facilities, faculty members, and the beauty of the campus as positive aspects of their experience.
The department is fantastic-- The students are all very nice and seem very happy, and most of the professors are warm and engaging.
Applicants commonly expressed concerns about potential mismatches in personality with advisors, limited social opportunities in small programs, and fears of insufficient publishing opportunities due to critical professors. It was recommended to carefully consider the fit with a prospective advisor and research the experiences of current students working with them.
I'm not sure if my personality will mesh well with my prospective advisor's.
Some students expressed concern about not having enough oppertunities to publish because profs are so critical of their work etc. This seems to vary by POI, so question grad students working with your POI carefully.
Applicants commonly wished they had known to wear comfortable shoes or bring boots for walking outside for about an hour during the event. This feedback suggests the importance of being prepared with appropriate footwear for potential outdoor activities.
Wear comfortable shoes or bring boots! There's some walking outside (for about an hour) involved.
Applicants generally found the one-on-one interviews with POIs positive, while some expressed that meeting with multiple professors at once in groups was also beneficial. They appreciated the opportunity to engage with faculty members in different settings throughout the application process.
Note: Interviews with POIs were one-on-one, and we met with other profs in groups of two or three applicants.
