The U.S. Army-Baylor University Entry-Level Occupational Therapy Doctorate (OTD) program is a collaborative initiative between Baylor University and the U.S. Army Medical Center of Excellence (MEDCoE). This 30-month, in-residence program is designed to produce active duty, commissioned occupational therapists who are clinician scientists and leaders prepared for worldwide military health system practice. The program emphasizes academic and clinical excellence, aligning with Baylor University's mission to educate individuals for worldwide leadership and service.
The curriculum comprises 120 semester credit hours delivered over eight continuous academic semesters. Students progress through a prescribed sequence of courses, including foundational subjects like Clinical Anatomy Lab and Neuroscience, as well as specialized topics such as Occupational Therapy in Mental Health and Upper Quarter Evaluation and Intervention. The program integrates Level I and Level II Fieldwork experiences, culminating in a Doctoral Capstone Experience and Project. This structure ensures graduates are well-prepared to practice as occupational therapy generalists across diverse settings and populations.
The program is housed at the U.S. Army Medical Center of Excellence at Fort Sam Houston, Texas. Students have access to state-of-the-art facilities that support both academic and clinical training. The program's location within a military medical center provides unique opportunities for hands-on learning and collaboration with experienced military healthcare professionals.
The Army–Baylor OTD program typically enrolls mid-career adults with prior professional or military experience. Recent cohorts show a strong male majority (approximately 80% male and 20% female) and an age range between 27 and 48 years old, averaging around 37. About two-thirds of students identify as White (65%), with the remaining one-third coming from underrepresented groups: roughly 11% Black, 8% Asian, 5% Hispanic, and 13% identifying as other or multiracial. Cohorts are compact, with 41 students in the 2023–25 class and 38 in the 2024–26 class, reflecting a focused, professionally oriented student body.

Although we could tier rank, over the past 25 years we've found no compelling benefit for ranking schools. Students are most successful when they prioritize personal and academic fit over school rank.
