About the School

California Health Sciences University College of Osteopathic Medicine (CHSU-COM), located in Clovis, California, is the first osteopathic medical school in the Central Valley. Established to address the region's physician shortage, CHSU-COM welcomed its inaugural class in July 2020. In April 2024, the American Osteopathic Association’s Commission on Osteopathic College Accreditation granted CHSU-COM a seven-year accreditation, the maximum term for a new medical school. The college is led by Dean John Graneto, DO, MEd, and is committed to recruiting, training, and retaining physicians to serve the local community, particularly underserved populations.

Curriculum

CHSU-COM offers a four-year Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine (DO) program. The first two years feature a modified, two-pass systems-based curriculum that integrates realistic patient scenarios with scientific principles, problem-solving, active learning, and clinical practice. Unique curricular components include medical knowledge, osteopathic manipulative medicine, clinical skills, nutrition as medicine, and patient-centered care. In the third and fourth years, students gain hands-on experience through clinical clerkships in regional hospitals, clinics, and healthcare facilities, rotating through specialties such as family medicine, internal medicine, surgery, pediatrics, behavioral medicine, and emergency medicine.

Facilities

The CHSU-COM campus features a three-story building with views of the Sierra Nevada mountains, opened in 2020. The facility includes large classrooms, an Osteopathic Skills lab, a library, private and collaborative study spaces, a student lounge with a Teaching Kitchen, and a Simulation Center. The Simulation Center comprises inpatient and outpatient areas designed to resemble hospital and clinic environments, respectively, enhancing interactive learning experiences.

Demographics

The inaugural class of 2024 consisted of 79 students, selected from approximately 4,000 applicants. About 34% of these students were from the Central Valley, and 81% were from California. The class achieved a 100% residency match rate, with 34% matching in the Central Valley and 65% entering primary care specialties. CHSU-COM's approved class size is 150 students, allowing for approximately 600 medical students to be enrolled at any time.

Why no Tier Rankings?

Although we could tier rank, over the past 25 years we've found no compelling benefit for ranking schools. Students are most successful when they prioritize personal and academic fit over school rank.
