The Carle Illinois College of Medicine, established in 2015 through a partnership between the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign and Carle Health, is the world's first engineering-based medical school. This innovative institution integrates engineering principles with medical education to train physician-innovators capable of developing transformative healthcare solutions. The college welcomed its inaugural class of 32 students in 2018 and has since grown to accommodate over 160 students and more than 700 affiliated clinical and academic faculty members.
The curriculum at Carle Illinois College of Medicine is designed to blend basic sciences, clinical sciences, engineering, and medical humanities throughout all four years of study. This interdisciplinary approach emphasizes patient-centered care, systems-based delivery, and early clinical exposure. Students engage in problem-based learning, team-based learning, and active learning labs, working in small teams alongside experts to tackle real-life medical cases. Clinical skills are integrated early, with students participating in clinical settings within their first ten days.
Carle Illinois students primarily train at Carle Foundation Hospital, a 489-bed regional care facility in Urbana, Illinois, which serves as the region's only Level I Trauma Center. The hospital is part of the Carle Health system and provides a comprehensive environment for clinical education. Additionally, students have access to the JUMP Simulation Center, featuring outpatient exam rooms, ICU rooms, a skills laboratory, and debrief rooms, all equipped with advanced technology to enhance learning through simulation experiences.
The inaugural class of Carle Illinois College of Medicine consisted of 32 students, evenly divided between men and women, with an average age of approximately 26 years. All members of this class received full, four-year privately funded scholarships. The college employs a two-round, rolling admissions process, considering applications holistically without a minimum GPA requirement, though an MCAT score of at least 498 is necessary. Applicants are expected to have strong backgrounds in biology, chemistry/biochemistry, mathematics/statistics, physics, and social sciences.

Although we could tier rank, over the past 25 years we've found no compelling benefit for ranking schools. Students are most successful when they prioritize personal and academic fit over school rank.
