Columbia University’s Programs in Occupational Therapy, housed within the Vagelos College of Physicians and Surgeons at Columbia Irving Medical Center in New York, are among the oldest and most forward-thinking OT programs in the country. The entry‑level Master of Science is a two‑year, full‑time, in‑person degree designed to develop therapists who excel as clinicians, researchers, educators, advocates, and leaders. A dual degree option (MS/MPH) is also available in partnership with the Mailman School of Public Health, and post‑professional pathways include both an online clinical doctorate (MS‑OTD) and a research‑oriented Doctor of Education. Student learning is guided by nationally recognized faculty and leverages Columbia’s position within an extensive academic medical ecosystem, including NewYork‑Presbyterian and its own medical center.
The MS program follows a carefully structured 24‑month progression beginning with foundational coursework in occupational therapy theory, body structure and function, clinical conditions, and research methods, followed by embedded Level I fieldwork in semester two and culminating in intensive Level II fieldwork placements. Coursework emphasizes evolving clinical roles such as provider, consultant, case manager, leader, and advocate, fostering lifelong learning and professional development. Students finish the full‑time program in 24–27 months, with strong fieldwork performance (average FWPE score of approximately 128) and graduation rates typically exceeding 94 percent. The curriculum supports dual‑degree MS/MPH students over three years, and post‑professional OTD students complete a 70‑credit online doctorate in one full academic year following MS completion.
OT students are based at the Columbia University Irving Medical Center campus in Washington Heights. They benefit from robust clinical training facilities, including the Simulation Center and access to affiliated hospitals (NewYork‑Presbyterian, ColumbiaDoctors) and ambulatory clinics. The medical center provides resources like the Long Health Sciences Library, dedicated simulation labs, People Development Center, student health services, and comprehensive disability, IT, and safety support. Athletic and wellness facilities on the Morningside campus are also available, as is Columbia’s Transportation system linking Morningside and medical campuses.
While Columbia’s OT program does not publish exhaustive demographic breakdowns for its MS cohorts, Columbia Irving Medical Center overall is marked by high diversity in its graduate population. The entry‑level MS class typically enrolls just over fifty students per year with high gender diversity in health sciences fields. Program outcome data reflects strong retention and licensure results with NBCOT pass rates averaging 96 percent or higher, reflecting a cohort that completes studies within two to nearly three academic years. The dual‑degree and post‑professional pathways also enroll competitive, experienced clinicians drawn from diverse academic and professional backgrounds.

Although we could tier rank, over the past 25 years we've found no compelling benefit for ranking schools. Students are most successful when they prioritize personal and academic fit over school rank.
