About the School

The California School of Podiatric Medicine has an 89-year reputation to uphold. Ask alumni or students why they chose this school and time and again they will speak about reputation. Pioneering efforts at CSPM created the field of biomechanics three decades ago and significantly contributed to establishing Sports Medicine as a booming subspecialty. CSPM also has an outstanding reputation in podiatric surgery and is one of the leaders in its continuing medical education programs. People speak about our renowned faculty, who literally wrote many of the textbooks used by all colleges of podiatric medicine.

Curriculum

The Doctor of Podiatric Medicine degree program at the California School of Podiatric Medicine is a four-year comprehensive curriculum, based on the allopathic (MD) model that encompasses the basic and clinical sciences with emphasis on the lower extremity. The Program is designed to prepare students to pass the CSPM end of the year comprehensive examinations, the national board examinations and to prepare students to enter a podiatric medical residency training program. Didactic course work is completed during the first three years of the program, while clinical rotations in biomechanics, general medicine, podiatric medicine and radiology begin at the start of the second year. Third year rotations continue with additional general medicine, podiatric medicine and surgery, all of which take place at affiliated Bay Area medical centers, including San Francisco General Hospital, St. Mary`s Medical Center and Oakland`s Alameda County Medical Center.

Facilities

For the past 25 years cooperative clinical programs with the University of California San Francisco (UCSF), San Francisco General Hospital, the Veterans Administration Medical Center and the Highland Hospital in Oakland have raised the bar on the education we offer. These hospitals are also primary training facilities for medical students from the University of California Medical School in San Francisco. This means that CSPM students work closely with other medical students at the same facilities and in the same rotations. Our newest affiliation with the St. Mary`s Medical Center in San Francisco provides student access to exciting clinical rotations through the Parnassus Heights Podiatry Group and St. Mary`s Operating Room, and allows us to hold classes for our third-year students in a beautiful new lecture auditorium. CSPM has a reputation for respecting choice. Fourth-year students can elect to base their final year of training at one of seven Core sites, which offer 7 to 12 months of custom training based on their preference for geography, patient load and clinical experience.\n
