The CUNY School of Medicine, established in 2015, is the medical school of The City University of New York (CUNY). Located on The City College of New York (CCNY) campus in Harlem, it is the only public medical school in Manhattan and the first to open in New York City since 1860. The school offers an accelerated seven-year B.S./M.D. program through the Sophie Davis Biomedical Education Program and a two-year M.S. program in Physician Assistant studies. In September 2024, Brooklyn College's eight-year coordinated B.A./M.D. program became an additional admission pathway, accepting 15 students annually.
The curriculum at the CUNY School of Medicine is designed to produce highly skilled medical practitioners committed to serving historically underserved communities. The seven-year B.S./M.D. program includes a rigorous three-year undergraduate education in biomedical sciences, followed by a four-year medical school curriculum. The Department of Clinical Medicine provides oversight of students' clinical instruction across various specialties, including anesthesiology, emergency medicine, family medicine, internal medicine, obstetrics and gynecology, pediatrics, and surgery. Additionally, the Department of Community Health and Social Medicine offers a three-year sequence of courses focusing on community-oriented primary care, with field placements in underserved areas of New York City.
The CUNY School of Medicine is situated in Townsend Harris Hall on the CCNY campus, a Collegiate Gothic-style building completed in 1908. The campus provides a vibrant environment with nearly 150 student organizations and an extensive intramural and intercollegiate athletic program. Medical students have access to a dedicated lounge, which serves as the center of student life, offering a space to study, dine, and relax. The lounge includes lockers and mailboxes for all students.
The CUNY School of Medicine is recognized for its diverse student body and commitment to increasing representation in the medical field. Approximately 53% of its students are Black and Latinx, compared to 16% nationally. The school also leads in enrolling female medical students, with women comprising 63% of the student body. Additionally, more than 80% of students are either immigrants or children of immigrants. The school employs a holistic admissions process that does not require the MCAT, aiming to make medical education accessible to historically underrepresented groups.

Although we could tier rank, over the past 25 years we've found no compelling benefit for ranking schools. Students are most successful when they prioritize personal and academic fit over school rank.
