About the School

Eastern Kentucky University is a public regional university located in Richmond, Kentucky, founded in 1906 and accredited by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools (SACSCOC). The OTD program is housed within EKU’s Department of Occupational Science and Occupational Therapy in the College of Health Sciences, offering two tracks: the Professional concentration for entry-level students who complete EKU’s BS in Occupational Science, and the Post‑Professional concentration for already-licensed OTs. The program is ACOTE‑accredited and graduates are eligible to sit for the NBCOT certification and state licensure.

Curriculum

EKU’s Professional OTD track follows a combined pathway where students begin as juniors in the BSOS degree before transitioning into the doctorate, requiring approximately 73–91 credit hours and integrating core topics such as advanced occupation-based practice, diversity, health disparities, policy, research, ethics, and evidence-based practice. The Post‑Professional track is offered online, consisting of 32–37 credits designed for working clinicians to deepen leadership, advocacy, and scholarly skills. Both tracks culminate in fieldwork experiences and a research capstone project demonstrating advanced critical thinking and practice improvement.

Facilities

Teaching and laboratory courses take place on EKU’s main Richmond campus within the College of Health Sciences, supported by clinical partnerships across the region including schools, outpatient clinics, inpatient settings, long-term care facilities, and rehabilitation hospitals. The online Post‑Professional track is delivered fully virtually in accelerated 6–7-week term formats, with free electronic textbooks and dedicated advisors, while the Department provides access to research databases and faculty mentorship for capstone research hosted via EKU’s digital commons.

Demographics

The OTD program at EKU maintains strong outcomes, with a 95% on-time graduation rate in the Professional concentration in 2024 and an aggregate 98% graduation rate across all OT programs from 2022–2024, placing EKU among the top-ranked OT programs nationally. Student demographics reflect broader trends in the profession, with relatively low racial/ethnic diversity—Black/African American students represent roughly 6.5% of enrollment—and gender balance skewed toward female students, mirroring national OT demographics, while EKU’s regional focus brings many graduates back into community practices across Kentucky.

Why no Tier Rankings?

Although we could tier rank, over the past 25 years we've found no compelling benefit for ranking schools. Students are most successful when they prioritize personal and academic fit over school rank.
