Eastern Virginia Medical School (EVMS), established in 1973, is a public medical institution located in Norfolk, Virginia. As of July 1, 2024, EVMS became part of the Macon and Joan Brock Virginia Health Sciences at Old Dominion University, integrating its programs and resources with the larger university system. The school was founded through community efforts to address a regional physician shortage and has since maintained a strong commitment to community health. EVMS is renowned for its contributions to reproductive medicine, notably achieving the first successful in vitro fertilization in the United States. The institution also emphasizes simulation-based education and research in areas such as pediatrics, geriatrics, diabetes, cancer, and neuroscience.
EVMS’s Doctor of Medicine (MD) program features the CareForward Curriculum, designed to cultivate compassionate and skilled clinicians. This curriculum emphasizes early clinical exposure, with students engaging with standardized patients from the first week of medical school. The program integrates organ system-based courses, case-based learning, and small group seminars covering subjects like anatomy, microbiology, pathology, pharmacology, and medical ethics. A distinctive aspect of the curriculum is its robust ultrasound training, providing students with advanced imaging skills. Additionally, between the first and second years, students participate in mandatory summer service-learning or research experiences, reinforcing the school’s commitment to community engagement.
EVMS boasts state-of-the-art facilities that support its educational and research missions. The Sentara Center for Simulation and Immersive Learning offers 16 clinical exam rooms, six group skills rooms simulating various clinical environments, an immersive virtual environment, observation suites, and advanced audiovisual capabilities for training and assessment. The campus includes several key buildings: Lewis Hall (primary education and research facility), Edward E. Brickell Medical Sciences Library, Hofheimer Hall (clinical departments), and the Jones Institute for Reproductive Medicine. Waitzer Hall, a 138,000-square-foot facility, serves M1, M2, and master’s students, providing modern classrooms and administrative offices.
EVMS has a diverse student body, reflecting its commitment to inclusivity and community representation. As of recent data, approximately 61% of full-time graduate students are women, and 39% are men. The racial and ethnic composition includes 50% White, 18% Asian, 13% Black or African American, 8% Hispanic, 6% identifying with two or more races, and smaller percentages of other groups. Notably, about 22% of medical students identify as part of a racial or ethnic minority, contributing to the school’s recognition as one of the most diverse medical schools in Virginia.
