Howard University is a private, federally chartered, Historically Black Research University in Washington, D.C., founded in 1867 and accredited by the Middle States Commission on Higher Education. The OTD program is housed within the College of Nursing and Allied Health Sciences and is fully accredited by ACOTE, making it one of the few entry‑level occupational therapy doctorate programs in the nation’s capital.
The full‑time, three‑year entry‑level OTD requires completion of 99 credit hours, combining research, theory, and intensive skill‑based courses, competency exams, 24 weeks of Level II fieldwork, and a 14‑week doctoral capstone experience culminating in a project. The curriculum emphasizes five core themes: occupation & human performance, critical thinking, diversity & underserved populations, research & scholarship, and leadership & professionalism.
Classes and laboratories take place on Howard’s 300‑acre urban campus in D.C., utilizing modern academic spaces within the College of Nursing and Allied Health Sciences. Clinical and fieldwork experiences are conducted in a variety of settings—local, national, and international—coordinated through partnerships with hospitals, schools, rehabilitation centers, and community organizations.
Howard’s OTD and allied OT programs demonstrate strong diversity: the occupational therapy master’s program recently reported approximately 93% female enrollment and over 82% racial/ethnic minority graduates. Across the university’s graduate population, about 74% identify as African American, with strong representation of international and other minority student groups.

Although we could tier rank, over the past 25 years we've found no compelling benefit for ranking schools. Students are most successful when they prioritize personal and academic fit over school rank.
