Founded in 1824, Sidney Kimmel Medical College (formerly Jefferson Medical College) is one of the oldest and most prolific private medical schools in the United States, having awarded over 31,000 medical degrees and boasting more living graduates than any other private medical school in the nation . Located in Center City Philadelphia, SKMC is part of Thomas Jefferson University and enrolls more than 1,000 students annually across its MD and joint degree programs . The college is committed to training physicians who will lead integrated healthcare delivery and research teams, discover new knowledge through investigation from the laboratory to the bedside and into the community, and set the standard for quality, compassionate, and efficient patient care.
SKMC’s medical education is structured around the JeffMD curriculum, a 45-month, on-campus program designed to integrate foundational science, clinical experience, and professional development . The curriculum is divided into three phases: Phase 1 (21 months) focuses on basic science and foundational clinical science, with early clinical exposure and scholarly inquiry ; Phase 2 (12 months) is the core clerkship year, offering clinical rotations across various hospitals ; and Phase 3 (12 months) includes advanced clinical rotations and preparation for residency . Throughout the curriculum, students engage in longitudinal “Threads” such as Clinical Skills, Health Systems Science, Professionalism/Ethics, and Wellness . Additionally, Scholarly Inquiry is a required component, providing students with skills and experience to become critical consumers and producers of medical knowledge.
SKMC students have access to a wide array of facilities and laboratories that support both education and research. The university’s shared research facilities include high-speed centrifuges, ultracentrifuges, scintillation counters, incubators, shakers, spectrophotometers, and gel imaging systems . Additionally, students benefit from resources such as the Jefferson Clinical Research Institute and the Jefferson Heart Institute . The Center for Translational Medicine provides state-of-the-art facilities and labs that facilitate cutting-edge research and training . These facilities are designed to enhance the speed of scientific discovery and the training of biomedical scientists at both the predoctoral and postdoctoral levels.
The 2024 entering class at SKMC comprised students from 107 different undergraduate institutions, representing 27 states and eight other countries . The average BCPM (Biology, Chemistry, Physics, and Math) GPA was 3.72, and the average total MCAT score was 514 . The mean age of matriculants was 23, with ages ranging from 20 to 34 . The class was composed of 54% women and 45% men, with 16.8% identifying as from groups underrepresented in medicine and 28% from non-white ethnic groups.

Although we could tier rank, over the past 25 years we've found no compelling benefit for ranking schools. Students are most successful when they prioritize personal and academic fit over school rank.
