James Madison University's Doctor of Audiology (Au.D.) program is a four-year, full-time doctoral program accredited by the Council on Academic Accreditation in Audiology and Speech-Language Pathology of the American Speech-Language-Hearing Association. The program admits small cohorts of 6-8 students annually, fostering a close-knit learning environment. Graduate assistantships, which include tuition waivers and stipends, are available to support students financially. The program boasts a 100% employment rate for graduates and a 100% pass rate on the PRAXIS certification exam.
The Au.D. curriculum spans eleven semesters and integrates academic coursework with extensive clinical practicum experiences. Students engage in research and lab work, gaining exposure to areas such as vestibular sciences, cochlear implants, hearing aids, electrophysiology, auditory neuroscience, psychoacoustics, and infant language development. The program also offers flexibility in clinical experiences and provides assistance with fourth-year clinical placements.
The program is housed in the Health and Behavioral Studies Building, a state-of-the-art facility equipped with a clinic and research laboratories. The JMU Audiology Clinic serves as a teaching, research, and community service center, offering diagnostic evaluations and treatment plans under the supervision of licensed audiologists. This setting provides students with hands-on clinical experience and supports research into communication disorders.
The Au.D. program at JMU maintains a small student body, with approximately 26 graduate students enrolled. The demographic composition includes 92% White and 7.69% Hispanic/Latino students, with a gender distribution of 96% female and 3% male.
