About the School

The largest medical school in the nation, the Lake Erie College of Osteopathic Medicine and School of Pharmacy mission is to prepare students to become outstanding osteopathic physicians and pharmacy practitioners through programs of excellence in education, research, clinical care, and community service to enhance the quality of life through improved health for all humanity. The primary goal of LECOM is to educate students to become physicians practicing within the osteopathic concept. A secondary goal of the College is to educate and develop primary care physicians who will practice in the osteopathic tradition. The College imparts to its students a firm academic background enabling them to pursue advanced training in other fields of osteopathic medicine as well as primary care. The College encourages its students to participate in research to further advance their chosen profession.

Curriculum

LECOM recognizes students unique learning styles by offering four distinct pathways: The traditional Lecture- Discussion Pathway provides a systems approach to medicine; Problem-Based Learning offers mentored small group clinical case-based study; Independent Study allows students to learn a structured pre-clinical curriculum on their own; The Primary Care Scholars Pathway is the only program of its kind in the nation, offering the completion of the DO degree in three years.

Facilities

The college has four fully equipped lecture halls. Each of the two larger amphitheater style classrooms seats more than 250 students and two smaller lecture halls seating 150 students each. All lecture halls have ‘smart classroom’ equipment, with wireless and wired computer network connections for student laptops. In the larger lecture halls, instructors control and illustrate presentations from a computer tablet at the lectern. <br/>

The study of the body is an important part of becoming a competent health care provider. LECOM teaches gross anatomy in a climate-controlled lab. A modern Osteopathic Manipulative Medicine training lab includes video monitors so students can see close-up demonstrations of OMM techniques. <br/>

The campus includes a student lounge/cafeteria where a professional food service staff provides breakfast and lunch. Throughout the day, students use the main lounge and the nearby Vora Student Lounge for both individual and group study. <br/>
