About the School

Established in 1828, the Medical College of Georgia (MCG) at Augusta University is Georgia’s only public medical school and one of the largest in the United States. With a class size of 304 students, MCG ranks as the fourth largest medical school class size nationally. The institution operates a statewide educational model, offering clinical training across various campuses, including Augusta, Athens (in partnership with the University of Georgia), Savannah (with Georgia Southern University), and additional regional sites in Albany, Rome, and Brunswick. This approach provides students with diverse clinical experiences, from urban hospitals to rural practices, preparing them to serve communities throughout Georgia and beyond.

Curriculum

MCG’s curriculum is designed to integrate foundational medical knowledge with early and continuous clinical experiences. The program emphasizes self-directed learning and the integration of basic and clinical sciences. A notable feature is the MCG 3+ program, allowing students to complete the core MD curriculum in three years, followed by specialized pathways in primary care, dual degrees (such as MD/MPH or MD/MBA), advanced research, or residency preparation. This flexible structure enables students to tailor their education to align with their career goals while ensuring comprehensive medical training.

Facilities

MCG boasts state-of-the-art facilities that support both education and research. The Carl T. Sanders Research and Education Building houses advanced laboratories and core facilities, including microscopy, imaging flow cytometry, and genome editing labs. The Wellstar MCG Health Medical Center, a 478-bed tertiary hospital, serves as the primary teaching hospital, offering services such as a Level I trauma center and specialized transplant programs. Additionally, the Children’s Hospital of Georgia provides pediatric care and serves as a key training site. These facilities ensure that students have access to cutting-edge resources and diverse clinical environments.

Demographics

MCG is committed to reflecting the diversity of Georgia’s population in its student body. Efforts are underway to increase the enrollment of underrepresented minorities, aiming for African American students to comprise 25% to 30% of the student population, aligning with the state’s demographics. Nearly 50% of MCG graduates choose to remain in Georgia to practice medicine, contributing to the state’s healthcare workforce and addressing regional medical needs.
