The Medical College of Wisconsin (MCW), established in 1893, is a private, nonprofit academic medical center headquartered in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. It is the largest private medical school in the state and ranks as the third-largest private medical school in the nation. MCW operates three campuses: Milwaukee (flagship), Green Bay, and Central Wisconsin (Wausau). The institution is affiliated with major healthcare partners, including Froedtert Hospital, Children’s Wisconsin, and the Clement J. Zablocki VA Medical Center. MCW is accredited by the Higher Learning Commission and the Liaison Committee on Medical Education (LCME).
MCW’s medical education is structured around the MCWfusion Curriculum, launched in 2023. This phased approach integrates foundational sciences with early clinical experiences. Phase 1 emphasizes organ system-based integrated science blocks and early clinical learning. Phase 2 consists of core clinical clerkships, and Phase 3 focuses on advanced clinical experiences and individualized electives. Additionally, students engage in Scholarly Pathways, allowing them to explore specific areas of interest throughout their education.
MCW’s primary campus is located within the Milwaukee Regional Medical Center, a 250-acre medical complex. Key affiliated hospitals include Froedtert Hospital, a 735-bed Level I adult trauma center; Children’s Wisconsin, a leading pediatric hospital; and the Clement J. Zablocki VA Medical Center. Research facilities encompass specialized centers such as the Mellowes Center for Genomic Sciences and Precision Medicine, which houses advanced genomic sequencing technologies, and various core facilities supporting imaging, transgenic models, and biostatistics.
MCW is committed to fostering a diverse and inclusive community. According to recent data, the student body comprises individuals from various racial and ethnic backgrounds. For instance, among all MCW students, there are 204 Asian, 141 Hispanic/Latinx, 97 Black or African American, 58 identifying with two or more races, and 1 American Indian or Alaska Native students.
