About the School

As students begin their study of medicine at the Medical College of Wisconsin, they discover it to be the most exciting and challenging experience they have ever encountered. Medical school, like the practice of medicine, is a constantly changing, dynamic process. The College creates a stimulating, inspiring learning environment by its focus on academic excellence, supported by a knowledgeable faculty, high-tech facilities, a superb library, and the availability of research programs for medical students.

Curriculum

The basic science portion of the MD program is taught during the first two years. It consists of the fundamental body of basic medical science knowledge, which is the foundation of medical practice and of new medical discoveries including extensive integration of genetics. The learning activities of the first two years are a mix of traditional curriculum formats (lectures, labs, dissection and discussion groups) and newer educational methods' computer-aided instruction (CAI), problem-based learning (PBL), and independent study options. Exposure to primary care patients occurs as first-year students work with mentors in the office setting. In addition to experiencing the patient-physician relationship, this office experience allows students to integrate their basic-science knowledge with the clinical practice of medicine.

Facilities

Students and faculty easily walk to clinics, labs, and classes at the College's facilities and the other campus teaching and research affiliates. These affiliates include: Froedtert Hospital, Children's Hospital of Wisconsin, Curative Care Network, Milwaukee County Behavioral Health Division, and the Blood Research Institute of the Blood Center of Southeastern Wisconsin. These facilities, along with the nearby Clement J. Zablocki Veterans Affairs Medical Center, are a mix of private and public institutions which offer a varied learning experience for students. Adjacent to the campus are two facilities helping to meet family needs: the Ronald McDonald House, which houses families with hospitalized children, and the Campus Day Care Center, which offers care for the infants and children of campus students and employees. The College's affiliations also include area hospitals and health care facilities. Together, these sites offer more than 4,600 teaching beds in a metropolitan area of more than one million people. As a benefit of the diversity in patient population, disease processes, hospitals and practice settings, students may choose to stay in Milwaukee for all of their clinical education. Students can also elect clinical rotations at metropolitan and rural private and public hospitals, private physician or group practices, or low-income clinics for the medically underserved.

Why no Tier Rankings?

Although we could tier rank, over the past 25 years we've found no compelling benefit for ranking schools. Students are most successful when they prioritize personal and academic fit over school rank.
