About the School

For more than a quarter of a century, MSUCOM has been a leader in the osteopathic profession. In 1969, there were five osteopathic colleges when the Michigan Legislature and the governor agreed to create MSUCOM as the first college of osteopathic medicine to receive state funding. The first new osteopathic educational institution in 50 years, MSUCOM paved the way for the creation of several new osteopathic colleges. Today, there are 20 colleges of osteopathic medicine in the United States. The college continues to serve as a leader for the osteopathic profession and for health care in the United States. In the osteopathic profession, our consortium of hospitals has been a national role model for changes to the Medicaid and Medicare systems.

Four-year curriculum presented at two levels of study: Pre-Clerkship Program, which involves the first six semesters of study in years one and two, and the Clerkship Program, which involves a Base Hospital assignment in years three and four at one of 20 affiliated hospital training sites throughout Michigan. The Extended Curricular Program permits students to take the Pre-Clerkship Program over three years instead of in two years. Students then take the regularly scheduled Clerkship Program in years four and five.

Why no Tier Rankings?

Although we could tier rank, over the past 25 years we've found no compelling benefit for ranking schools. Students are most successful when they prioritize personal and academic fit over school rank.
