The Medical University of South Carolina (MUSC), founded in 1824 and accredited by SACSCOC, is a public academic health-sciences university located in Charleston, SC. Its Division of Occupational Therapy is consistently ranked in the top 10% by U.S. News & World Report and hosts faculty fellows from the American Occupational Therapy Association.
MUSC offers a rigorous, evidence-based OTD curriculum available in residential and hybrid formats, emphasizing interprofessional collaboration, experiential learning, and service such as the student-run CARES Therapy Clinic. The program spans eight semesters, including intensive labs, two full-time 12-week fieldwork rotations in year two, and a 14-credit doctoral capstone project.
Students benefit from robust facilities including on-campus clinical labs, anatomy and simulation centers, and hybrid-lab spaces totaling over 21,000 sq ft in downtown Charleston. Additionally, access is granted to biomechanics, motion-analysis, exercise physiology, neuromuscular performance, and transcranial stimulation research labs.
While MUSC does not publish OTD-specific enrollment data on its site, the broader university enrolls approximately 3,240 students (334 undergraduates and 2,906 postgraduate including those in health professions). MUSC emphasizes diversity and interprofessional education, accepting U.S. citizens, permanent residents, and qualifying visa holders, though F‑1 visas are not accepted for OT programs.

Although we could tier rank, over the past 25 years we've found no compelling benefit for ranking schools. Students are most successful when they prioritize personal and academic fit over school rank.
