In 1813, James McGill, a Scottish immigrant who prospered in Montreal, bequeathed his 46-acre estate and 10,000 pounds to the Royal Institution for the Advancement of Learning that became McGill University. Chartered in 1821, McGill began instruction in 1829 with the Faculty of Medicine. The Faculty of Arts followed in 1843, succeeded by modern languages, commercial studies and sciences. Over the decades the University steadily added to its programs, facilities and professional schools. The first women students were admitted in 1884.
The curriculum objectives correspond to the Faculty of Medicine mission and aim to equip the student to meet the most stringent standards of medical practice and professionalism to ensure career-long excellence in whole-person care. Upon completion of the program, the graduate will be able to function responsibly, in a supervised clinical setting, at the level of an undifferentiated physician. The program emphasizes the fundamental sciences and scientific methodology as pillars of medical knowledge. It provides 50% traditional lectures and 50% small group teaching, as well as laboratory and computer teaching.
The teaching hospital network of McGill University is an integral part of the research, teaching, and clinical activities of the Faculty of Medicine. By agreement and tradition, the administration, medical staff, and scientific personnel of these institutions are closely integrated with McGill University and form the basis of the clinical departments of the Faculty of Medicine. The McGill University Health Center (MUHC) is a new institution created by the merger and integration of five of the teaching hospitals of the Faculty of Medicine. The MUHC is one of the five Centres hospitaliers universitaires recognized by the Ministry of Health of the Province of Quebec and is the primary site for the teaching programs of the University. The activities of the MUHC are carried out at the following four locations, The Royal Victoria Hospital, The Montreal General Hospital, The Montreal Children's Hospital, and The Montreal Neurological Hospital. There are two are other principal teaching hospitals, The Sir Mortimer B. Davis Jewish General Hospital and the St. Mary`s Hospital Centre as well as six affiliated hospitals.

Although we could tier rank, over the past 25 years we've found no compelling benefit for ranking schools. Students are most successful when they prioritize personal and academic fit over school rank.
