The University of Puget Sound, established in 1888, is an independent, residential liberal arts college located in Tacoma, Washington. The School of Occupational Therapy, founded in 1944, was the first program of its kind in the region and is consistently ranked among the top programs in the Pacific Northwest. The program offers three degrees: an entry-level Master of Science in Occupational Therapy (MSOT), an entry-level Doctorate in Occupational Therapy (OTD), and a post-professional Doctorate in Occupational Therapy (DrOT), which is offered every 2–3 years.
The curriculum emphasizes a blend of classroom instruction and experiential learning. Students participate in Level I and Level II fieldwork experiences, including community-based mental health clinics and on-site teaching clinics, where they engage in the full occupational therapy process under faculty supervision. Courses cover topics such as health and occupation across diverse populations, functional anatomy, neuroscience, research methods, and psychosocial occupational therapy across the lifespan.
The program is housed in the William T. and Gail T. Weyerhaeuser Center for Health Sciences, a 42,500-square-foot facility designed to encourage cross-disciplinary interaction among health and behavioral sciences. The center includes specialized labs and classrooms for occupational therapy, exercise science, psychology, and neuroscience. Additionally, the on-site Occupational Therapy Teaching Clinic features a simulated apartment, activity spaces, up-to-date assistive technology, and a 4,000-square-foot mobility park that simulates various outdoor environments.
The current doctoral‐level and master’s occupational therapy cohorts at the University of Puget Sound reflect national trends in the profession. Approximately 92 percent of graduate OT students identify as female, while around 7 percent are male. Racial and ethnic composition shows about 69 percent White students, 7 percent Asian, nearly 4 percent Hispanic/Latino, and under 1 percent Black/African American, with around 10 percent identifying as two or more races and 8 percent unknown. The broader graduate student body skews majority female—about 81 percent—while overall graduate racial diversity remains modest. With roughly 220 graduate students across all programs, the OT classes are intimate, fostering personalized engagement with faculty.

Although we could tier rank, over the past 25 years we've found no compelling benefit for ranking schools. Students are most successful when they prioritize personal and academic fit over school rank.
