Rowan-Virtua School of Osteopathic Medicine (Rowan-Virtua SOM) is a public medical school located in Stratford, New Jersey, with an additional campus in Sewell. Established in 1976, it is one of two medical schools associated with Rowan University. The Sewell campus, which opened in 2022, is situated on the campus of Rowan College of South Jersey, marking the first time in New Jersey's history that a four-year medical school has been located on a community college campus. This expansion reflects a collaborative effort to enhance medical education and healthcare access in the region.
At the Sewell campus, Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine (DO) students engage exclusively in the Problem-Based Learning (PBL) track of the Tensegrity Curriculum. This student-centered approach uses clinical case presentations to stimulate the acquisition of basic science knowledge and the development of clinical reasoning skills. The PBL tracks at both the Stratford and Sewell campuses are fully integrated and synchronized to facilitate cross-campus collaboration and student success. Additionally, the Sewell campus is set to welcome the inaugural class of the Physician Assistant (PA) Program in Fall 2026, further expanding its educational offerings.
The Sewell campus is housed on the second floor of the Rowan Medicine Building, featuring state-of-the-art medical education and research facilities. These include an Osteopathic Manipulative Medicine (OMM) lab, an auditorium, an Anatomage Table, a library, and 18 PBL classrooms. The first floor hosts clinical practices offering comprehensive medical services across various specialties, such as Family Medicine, Internal Medicine, Pediatrics, Behavioral and Mental Health, and more. This co-location of educational and clinical facilities creates a dynamic learning environment, allowing students to integrate their PBL medical education with hands-on clinical experience.
As of the 2022-2023 academic year, the Sewell campus enrolled 44 medical students, comprising 26 males and 18 females. The first-year class included 30 matriculants, with 14 males and 15 females. Specific data regarding the racial and ethnic composition of the student body, as well as the proportion of in-state versus out-of-state matriculants, is not available.
