Salus at Drexel University, originally founded in 1919 as the Pennsylvania College of Optometry, is now a private, graduate-focused institution headquartered in Elkins Park (Cheltenham Township), Pennsylvania. As part of the College of Health Sciences, Education and Rehabilitation, the OTD program builds on a century-long legacy of healthcare education and is fully accredited by MSCHE. Salus serves approximately 1,100 professional and graduate students, offering a blend of interprofessional and evidence-based training across disciplines.
Salus offers a post-professional Doctorate in Occupational Therapy (OTD) designed for licensed OTR/Ls. The program is primarily online, requiring nine asynchronous courses (24 credits) plus two on-campus, five-day residency workshops (6 credits). Three completion pathways—16 months, 27 months, or up to 5 years—allow professional flexibility. Students choose one advanced specialty track (Remedial Vision Rehabilitation or Health and Wellness) and complete a mentored scholarly capstone project tailored to their interests in leadership, academia, advocacy, or clinical expertise.
The OTD program utilizes Salus’s suburban Philadelphia Elkins Park campus, with interactive workshops hosted on site. It also draws on clinical training spaces such as the Occupational Therapy Institute (OTI) located within The Eye Institute campus in West Oak Lane, alongside broader access to the university’s community-based clinics. These settings support hands-on residencies, interprofessional collaboration, and field-based capstone experiences.
Salus University’s Occupational Therapy program exhibits a strong and inclusive student profile. Overall university enrollment is about 1,148 students with a gender distribution of around 80 percent female and 20 percent male. Ethnic diversity spans White (55 percent), Asian (17 percent), non‑US citizens (10 percent), Hispanic (8 percent), Black/African American (7 percent), and other smaller groups. Within graduate programs, approximately 52 master’s OT students and 14 doctoral OT students are enrolled, with the MSOT cohorts showing a high retention and completion picture: for example, the Class of 2023 featured 53 matriculants (38 White, 3 Black, 4 Hispanic, 6 Asian, 1 non‑US citizen) with nearly all (51) graduating on time for a 95 percent on‑time graduation rate.

Although we could tier rank, over the past 25 years we've found no compelling benefit for ranking schools. Students are most successful when they prioritize personal and academic fit over school rank.
