Since 1972, the SIU School of Dental Medicine has continued to carry out its mission ? to improve the oral health of southern Illinois and the region through education, patient care, scholarship and service. During its 30-year history, the SIU dental school has trained over 1,300 dentists.
The cardinal objective of the SIU dental school is a balanced, innovative program of exceptional quality in the field of dental medicine education. Curriculum development is directed toward and focused on oral health care as part of the total health care of an individual. We have structured our academic content to fit an educational experience that will enable our students to acquire a D.M.D. degree, while simultaneously pursuing areas of special interest.
The primary dental education and patient care facilities of the dental school are located in the historic City of Alton. Most patient care is provided in the Main Clinic in Alton, with 72 patient-care stations for student clinical experience. Rotations to the community-based East St. Louis Dental Clinic offer students an extra opportunity to provide dental care to patients in an underserved area. In addition, experience in diagnosis, treatment planning, surgery, and prosthodontic treatment for implant dentistry are all offered at the Implant Clinic on the SIU Edwardsville campus.

Although we could tier rank, over the past 25 years we've found no compelling benefit for ranking schools. Students are most successful when they prioritize personal and academic fit over school rank.
