About the School

The teaching and practice of humanistic medicine is central to the mission of Temple University School of Medicine. The School is a mecca for students and faculty who understand that medicine demands lifelong devotion to science, service, and heart. Known for our culture of diversity, collaboration and innovation, Temple University School of Medicine was Pennsylvania's first co-educational medical school (founded September 16, 1901). Many of our faculty and alumni have made their mark on medical history -- and as we begin our second century, we're entering an exciting era of expansion and growth.

Curriculum

The education of medical students at Temple University School of Medicine includes a solid foundation in the fundamentals of basic and clinical science. The first two years are taught in an integrated approach, closely tying basic science concepts to clinical medicine, professionalism and medical ethics. The clinical years are marked by extensive hands-on experience in caring for patients. The new Clinical Simulation and Skills Center allows students to learn basic clinical skills in a safe learning environment throughout the curriculum. Thus, graduates are exceptionally well prepared to pursue residency training.

Facilities

We are attracting nationally-known faculty at an unprecedented rate, along with students and residents of exceptional quality. We are expanding our portfolio of world-class interdisciplinary research centers. We are rolling out a new curriculum that will enhance our reputation for producing graduates with superior clinical skills. Moreover, by 2010, we will add a stunning, new $150 million education and research building to our complex, a new home for the School of Medicine. Our urban campus includes a School of Pharmacy, a School of Dentistry, a College of Health Professions, and three hospitals: Temple University Hospital, Temple University Children's Medical Center, and Shriners Children's Hospital. We are recognized for providing exceptional primary care to an underserved community as well as for tertiary and quaternary services that draw patients, faculty, and students from near and far.
