Curriculum

The curriculum at the University of Chicago provides a solid foundation in the basic sciences, building on a rich tradition at our institution in developing new knowledge. The relationship of the basic to the clinical sciences is demonstrated to students through innovative courses (such as Clinical Pathophysiology & Therapeutics). Finally, the last component of the curriculum is the clinical experience that students receive. Students begin seeing patients in their first quarter, participate in clinical skills training with standardized patients in the Clinical Performance Center, and are deeply engaged in patient care in the third and fourth year.

Facilities

The University of Chicago Medicine campus includes the Center for Care and Discovery, Bernard Mitchell Hospital, Chicago Lying In Hospital, Wyler's Children Hospital, and the Duchossois Center for Advanced Medicine. With inpatient beds, an active outpatient service, and fully staffed state-of the-art facilities, our facilities provide an excellent resource as the basis for our students' clinical training.

The medical campus is the major provider of health care for the immediate neighborhood. It also meets community needs through shared service agreements, referral relationships with physicians and hospitals, and continuing medical education classes for five community hospitals. At the tertiary care level, the medical campus draws referrals from the entire region, including northern Indiana. Patients with particularly complex or obscure medical problems often travel long distances to the University of Chicago for treatment.

The medical campus includes many research institutes, among them the National Cancer Research Center; the Diabetes Research and Training Center; the Clinical Research Center; and the Joseph P. Kennedy, Jr. Intellectual and Developmental Disabilities Research Center.

Why no Tier Rankings?

Although we could tier rank, over the past 25 years we've found no compelling benefit for ranking schools. Students are most successful when they prioritize personal and academic fit over school rank.
