About the School

The Mission of the School of Medicine is to develop competent physicians with an outstanding academic preparation within a humanistic and holistic framework, with a highly developed commitment to social duties, and service to Puerto Rico and Hispanic communities throughout the U.S. mainland. The UCC School of Medicine is committed to providing our students with integrated knowledge from the basic sciences to medicine and with disciplined critical thinking and analysis. We encourage a dedication to lifelong learning as well as attitudes of compassion and respect for human dignity. The School of Medicine contributes to the enrichment and enhancement of knowledge by strengthening a creative environment that fosters the development of research in the biomedical, clinical, and psychosocial sciences oriented to the health needs of our community. Within the scope of its mission, the School of Medicine offers quality health services at the primary care level and in specialized curative rehabilitative services in a cost-effective and accessible manner to the population that it serves.

Curriculum

The curriculum of the School of Medicine consists of four years of studies. In the first two years it provides students with a basic foundation in both biomedical sciences and clinical skills. The students are introduced early to standardized patients as they learn communication, observation, and examination skills. Students have an opportunity to use their newly acquired skills with genuine patients in the Longitudinal Primary Care Preceptorship under the supervision of community preceptors. The students receive formative evaluations from the patients and faculty during the sessions in which standardized patients are used.
