The Carver College of Medicine is committed to providing a diverse set of educational experiences and activities to help you explore and define the kind of physician you want to become. You will be well-prepared to address future healthcare challenges and to serve those seeking good health and healing.
The first two years curriculum helps students identify and develop the skills, knowledge, awareness and sensitivities that are the basis of medicine. A first-year medical student at Iowa learns the factual and technical language of the field, comes to understand the structure and function of the body in health and disease and begins to apply this knowledge of pathophysiology to clinical problems. The curriculum also seeks to orient medicine in the larger social context in which conflicting values, goals, economic motives and political forces shape health care access and delivery. Second year students continue basic science study, applying what they have learned about the body systems in order to understand how disease processes alter those systems and their regulation as well as how the body responds to illness and injury. The final two years improve basic clinical skills, expand experience in generalist and subspecialty medical disciplines and offer opportunities to develop the advanced skills necessary for residency training and lifelong learning.
The University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics was established in 1898 with 50 beds and a handful of physicians. Today, University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics is Iowa`s only academic medical center and comprehensive care center with 769 beds, over 200 healthcare specialties, with approximately 638,000 patient care visits and admissions annually.
