The Roy J. and Lucille A. Carver College of Medicine, established in 1870, is the medical school of the University of Iowa, located in Iowa City. It holds the distinction of being the first co-educational medical school in the United States and was among the 22 original members of the Association of American Medical Colleges in 1876. The college is an integral part of University of Iowa Health Care, a fully integrated academic medical center committed to patient care, biomedical research, and medical education.
The Carver College of Medicine's curriculum is designed around three core principles: Innovation, Integration, and Individualization. This approach emphasizes hands-on experiences and flexibility, allowing students to tailor their education to their career aspirations. The curriculum is structured as a triple helix model, comprising three intertwined strands that extend through all four years of medical school: Mechanisms of Health and Disease, Medicine and Society, and Clinical and Professional Skills. This model ensures a deep and progressively advancing understanding of medical knowledge and its application.
The college features state-of-the-art facilities, including the Medical Education and Research Facility (MERF), which houses lecture halls, classrooms, clinical skills suites, and research laboratories. Adjacent to MERF is the Carver Biomedical Research Building, providing laboratory space for various departments and housing advanced imaging devices. Additionally, the Pomerantz Family Pavilion features over 56,000 square feet dedicated to patient care and clinical research, including diagnostic imaging suites and minor procedure rooms.
